I like Pavlik, boo, but that doesn't mean I have pretend that this isn't squarely on Bob Arum's shoulders. If he's not going to put up the money for a better opponent than this, Kelly might as well have just taken on Rubio. One or two guys pricing themselves out is one thing; when it's happening to every possible opponent, it really just comes off that Pavlik's management was lowballing the **** out of everyone. Also, let's not forget: even if Arthur didn't have a mandatory, the money wouldn't be there for both fighters to even make that fight happen, either. They almost couldn't "afford" Paul Williams. Newsflash to Arum: People aren't going to take a possible career ending beating unless you pay them for it. Arum's a promotor. He's got a knockout fighter who happens to be middleweight champion. The ****er needs to do his job and promote. If he's not going to do a better job of selling Kelly and creating more value in Pavlik's name (thus giving us better fights), he's wasting a future mainstream boxing star.
You ain't kidding there. This week alone I've seen some of the same people who ripped a 36 year old Joe for fighting a 43 year old Hopkins getting geeked about a 25 year old Dawson fighting Hopkins' 40 year old leftovers, and now Pavlik's fighting someone who's not even the man at welter and somehow that's Joe's fault. ****...at least Bernard would let his ex welterweights win a fight or two at Middleweight before he took them apart.
