Excellent post. Boxing being a piece of discussion on ESPN will be huge for the sport. No coincidence that Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was announced in the middle of all these crazy Haymon announcements.
haymons model is not sustainable.the casuals will just google and find out that his boxers are in a league.tradition has DNA and if u saw the 1st PBC shows it was overly sanitized and clinical.with over 200 fighters on his payroll and growing and him paying for TIMEBUYS his hoping to fake it before u make it.
Not sure if he'll destroy it.. but he'll change the landscape. Not sure if that's good or bad. I'll mourn the loss of FNF though, it's all gonna be Haymon guys now. It's like back when Don King forced guy's who wanted to fight his guys to sign with him.
Atlas is staying as of right now and it won't effect fighters in places like Germany and the UK at all. It will only effect fighters in America provided he is able to pull it off he sure is spending A LOT of money for zero return up front. What happens when the money runs out and he isn't turning a profit? It is obvious to anyone that he wants a UFC type boxing organization. Will he be successful is the question?
I dont think Guererro-Thurman, Lopez-Berto, Garcia-Peterson, Russell-Gonzalez, Charlo-Martisoyan or Lee-Quillin are showcases
As soon as he started buying up airtime it was obvious he was attempting to create a closed boxing league ala UFC. The difference is MMA built up around the UFC brand, there was no foundation, boxing already had a foundation. I am indeed curious as to how this will payoff
So will this be bumped up to ESPN or still be on ESPN2? Either way, if there's high profile boxing matches happening on network tv, and their network especially, ESPN will probably give the sportuchore coverage. Hopefully at least.
Again ... WHY are you guys so upset that a "paper" title isn't being waved around for a fight? Is Andy Lee THE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD? No. Is Peter Quillin THE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD? No. So why are you so upset that the network isn't going to delve into all the sanctioning body **** and try to explain to people all that nonsense. The sanctioning BODIES are the problem. The sanctioning bodies have been the problem forever. The sanctioning bodies created all the extra divisions. They shortened title fights. They screwed up the weigh-ins. They strip champs for no reasons. They block unifications. They name interim and "regular" champs. They are THE PROBLEM. But if someone isn't waving a WBA "regular" belt when they step into the ring ... it's a freaking crisis with you guys. Lee-Quillin is a fight between two middleweights. Neither is THE CHAMP. The network doesn't care. The fans know they aren't the champ and don't care. Why are you all soiling yourselves just because the IBF belt won't get waved around? I did not know ... until a couple days after Berto-Lopez ... that it was for a WBA "inteim" belt. I had no clue. I didn't read any prefight stories before that fight. They didn't mention it on the SPIKE TV broadcast. Neither is the "real" champ. It didn't matter regardless. All people have done FOR DECADES is b*tch about this WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO nonsense, but the minute someone starts to ignore them, the same guys freak out. You're getting what you all said you wanted. What the hell are you talking about? The WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO haven't been around for 100 years. They were ALL formed to make a buck. NONE of them care about boxing history or following a lineage. All have stripped the "real" champ in a division or added "paper" belts when they needed extra sanctioning fees. They have ALL SCREWED UP BOXING. They deserve no defense. And you are just "assuming" that if the PBC names its own champs, those guys won't be the LINEAL champs. We all try to figure out who the "real" champ is. (Unlike the WBA, who named BERTO it's "interim" welterweight champ a week ago so it could collect another sanctioning fee.) The winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao will be the best welterweight in the world. I hope the winner is named the PBC WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION of the world. There's no rush. Name a "WORLD" champ when the opportunity presents itself. How is that DESTROYING 100 years of history? How many current welterweight champs does JUST the WBA have now - three? Yeah, that's honoring boxing history.
Why is that a bad thing?. How many great events has Haymon hosted throughout the years?, isn't the biggest fight in history(in terms of money) coming soon with Haymon being one of the primal forces behind it?. I'm not a Haymon fan nor am I hater for that matter, but I don't get all the negativity and nonsense regarding this guy. Is it because he's associated with Mayweather and fans are overly emotional when it comes to Mayweather and feel the need to hate everyone involved with him?, or did he do something completely out of order that I'm missing here?. Doesn't he get his fighters paid as they rightfully deserve unlike previous managers/promoters that ripped Boxers off(remember Don King?) completely and ruined their careers?
