I agree it's bull**** and it's hurting the sport. With that said I'll be watching which ever card is free on Sept. 13.
Showtime consistently puts out the better, more competitive fights, although HBO puts out the bigger names against inferior competition. I prefer Showtime 7:3. Also, commentary on HBO BAD is in my opinion completely boring and horrible. I prefer showtime's, which sometimes seems cheesy or amaturish because of the programming of the show, but its more exciting.
Exactly. Not to mention even if you don't have one they rebroadcast the fight 3 hours later. I don't see what the problem is. I will be watching JMM vs Casamayor and enjoy Guzman Campbell later on. I am just glad these fights are going down.
Well... actually the Showtime vs. HBO rivalry is good for boxing because if there's competition, they are forced to advertise their own show better to win the hardcore audience - and win the larger, non-hardcore audience as well, because the other channel will steal some or most of the potential audience. If there's no competition, you don't have to spend a large amont of money on advertizing, you'll have the average pro-boxing audience watching your show anyway producing with average ratings (based on the harcore fans). Of course you won't make new fans/audience with low advertizing. But if there are two shows, on one hand, it's bad for the hardcore fans, because they are forced to choose between the two, but on the other hand, both channels are putting down more money to advertize, therefore getting the non-hardcore audience's attention as well... of course HBO and Showtime has to split the viewers in the end, but from the standpoint of the sport, it's mediocre rating (one show) vs. a good rating (two shows) with a larger audience. And even if the larger audience splits into two shows, boxing is a winner, because more people are watching boxing on a Saturday night.
It makes no sense at all. I was going to make a post about this myself on asking why HBO and Showtime seem to have big fights on the same weekends. I have no idea why they do. They already had a double header on April 12. It just makes no business sense.
I like the rivalry, usally get a good fight out of it. Showtime wins last weekend. I'll probably watch JMM/Casa first.
During the Summer months there are 3 Holidays that screw that up (Memorial, July 4th, Labor Day) and their ratings were garbage last year people were out of town on vacation and did not watch so they changed it just for the Summer I read it in an article. Plus the Olympics this Summer is messing up the Boxing schedule also.
I'm fine with it most of the time, competition is good, but for those very special 'mega fights' that could be made, those are the times where they really need to be able to work together a hell of a lot more. Look how much cash they made off Lewis-Tyson because they were finally willing to work together for the sake of filthy lucre. I'm sure they could have other big cross-promotional nights like that at least once a year if they wanted to.
actually Berto vs Rodriguez was after Miranda vs Abraham, during Miranda vs Abraham it was those 2 fat guys going at it on HBO Also, obviously the networks want to showcase their big fights on Saturday night, seems logical to me
I usually just watch the HBO matches first, because Showtime is better about replaying their fights. It isn't great, them doing it, but hey, look at Baseball - multiple games on at one time, you've gotta make a choice. The more good matches are made, the better the sport is. Though, I don't really like HBO OR Showtime that much, because ever since they came around, boxing on channels such as CBS and ABC and Fox has gone extinct. Thus, so has mainstream coverage.
