Has it ever occured to you that this fight has been picked by prestigious networks like CNN, BBC, etc. in their mainstream sports news because it is something that they cannot ignore. Have you heard a news on boxing in CNN or BBC before this fight. Not even Floyd or dela Hoya was covered. Both fighters were treated like rock stars during their arrival in Vegas. Tickets are sold out but we will still get to know the results of PPV sales. But this fight is no longer Philippines and England event. This is a world event as aptly titled "Battle of the East and West." We may not have realized it but this fight is huge and bigger than previous fights. This is even bigger than Hatton and dela Hoya fight, if I may venture to say.
This is bigger than Mayweather/Hatton for one reason that being the level of support behind each fighter. Hatton is love din England but when Manny fights the whole country takes notice. Mayweather never had that level of interest.
"EVER?" :huh NO. Biggest hype? Yes, (maybe). Thanks to the internet, cnn, time, hbo. Biggest numbers? Nope, definitely. Oscar-Floyd had and will always be the gold standard.
Let's wait for the PPV results before we make judgment. Although the financial economic crisis would have taken its toll on the numbers.
IMO, Hatton had lost some luster since and because of his defeat against May, especially with Brit fans, so this fight will not be as big (at least for the Brits) as the May-Hatt encounter.
Internet and cable TV are now in the same era. HBO is a cable tv network which now utilizes internet sites to promote its programs, not exclusively boxing. They go hand and hand. They call that convergence in communications.
Maybe in Manchester pubs where Hatton used to hang out. If pub conversations are your gauge, Pac-dela Hoya would top them all. Up to now, people and media are still talking/writing about it. I don't think Hatton's hitting the ring post wouold be an interesting topic of conversation in pubs all over the world.
I saw people standing outside sports bars in the cold for De la Hoya vs. Mayweather. That is something else because I'd be lucky to find people to watch boxing with me where I live.
Lewis vs Tyson was MUCH bigger here in the UK. You had England vs Argentina on the Friday, Lewis vs Tyson on the Saturday and The Queens Golden Jubilee when we were all given an extra day of work... This is only the biggest fight ever if you are too young to remember any others or the biggest Pacquaio nuthugger ever.
