Barkley matches happened at 160lb when tommy was older, held less of a size advantage, and was past his best. were talking the peak lean freaklisly big 147lb young version of tommy hearns ps watch 6'1 williams vs margarito, the hieght and reach gave margarito problems all night
I know, Suzie. And I'd favor Hearn's as well. You know these threads almost make for good discussion after a certain fighter is riding high from a big win.
Hearns by brutal KO within the first few rounds. No, I don't mean he KO's Margarito by accumulated punishment, I mean he KO's him flat on his face and leaves Margo out cold.
Oh yeah, Hearns had a streak where he was breaking his hands every fight. As a matter of fact after the Duran fight one of the questions the interviewer asks is how Tommy's hands were doing. Hearns is too fast, too tall, too long, and hits too hard. I'm not sure if a welterweight has yet been born that could take everything Hearns had to throw when he wasn't having hand problems. Margarito's only chance would be to get in quick and do his best to destroy chin quickly. But even if Hearns didn't have a great chin, he had tremendous will He might will himself to stay up and keep throwing.
Hmm, thanks for the clarification Wanderer. Didn't know Hearn's had hand problems, none the less Calzaghe level hand problems.
Brave. Very brave indeed. And I'm not getting carried away by Margarito's chin and durability last night. He's hardly been wobbled in his career. I have a few of Margarito's fights and known all about him since he beat Sergio Martinez 8 years ago on the Barrera-Morales I undercard. Some people might not know, Margarito was De La Hoya's sparring partner for his fights with Coley and Mosley in 2000. Hearns' power is rather lethal, but Margarito hasn't shown enough vulnerabilty in terms of punch resistance to suggest to me that Hearns would flatten him easily inside a couple of rounds.
I'll pick Hearns, i would like to take this opportunity though to express my opinion that Hearns is most likely the most overrated ATG on this forum, i believe that.
Sorry Russel! He's an ATG welter, and number 1 at 154's history imo, but h2h its as if he's the best ever the way people talk of him here, its just not my opinion
It took a supreme effort by one of the greatest fighters ever (Leonard) to beat Hearns at Welterweight. What I like about Hearns is how he changed to boxer in that fight. So, if by chance Margarito could take his punch, Tommy would jab him silly. Margarito is a terrific fighter who has my utmost respect, but he's no Ray Leonard. Tommy tko in 10.
