Thomas Hearns vs John Mugabi

I wouldn't say Hagler was having an off night or looking soft, he looked just as "bad" in the Leonard fight. He was begining the stage of life where he physically was going down hill quicker and quicker and his handspeed was going to be worse and worse with each fight and he'd never be as sharp as he was in the early 1980s.

 

Hearns by ko if mugabi gets to aggressive he walks on to a right and it's an early night . Mugabi is not going to outbox hearns either but if the fight goes past the say the fifth the more chance you have to give mugabi of landing a big shot on a tiring hearns

 

Hearns would take him out quite early.

 

The shots Mugabi and Hagler traded were savage. I personally feel that part of Hagler was left in that ring as he had to endure his toughest fight in order to deal with this Beast!
Mugabi was a beast. He wasn't the same after.
How do you guys even rate Mugabi in terms of skills? To me it seams like he was just a killer in the ring. Not very skilled, but he could hit. And please don't say he was weak chinned, Hagler had to dig deep and keep at it to put him away.

As for Mugabi vs Hearns. Hearns hits hard, but he has to be relentless in order to stop pre-Hagler Mugabi from coming at him. I'd favour Hearns (heavily biased as one of my faves) but I wouldn't count out the lucky punch.

Hagler beat Hearns, but the guys Hagler and Hearns fought, Tommy always stopped them earlier or hurt them more and much quicker. Roldan,Duran,Geraldo,Leonard. I think both of them fought Mike Colbert, but I am not sure.

 

I voted John, but ONLY if it was the Mugabi before the Hagler fight. Marvelous Marvin ruined him and his punch resistance in their classic matchup. 26 and 26 big KO's is no joke.

 

Hearns has every advantage, but his chin wouldn't hold up to punchers. Mugabi made it to the 11th round against Hagler. Hearns only made it to the third. Mugabi has a solid chin and can take Hearns' punishment long enough to land a hail mary. Hearns wins every round and then goes to sleep.

 

Mugabi was made for Tommy at 154 lbs. A Hearns straight right to demolish the Ugandan sometime in the first six rounds.

Tommy was clearly the better boxer, and Mugabi's power was such, Hearns would be focused and respectful, thus less likely to get caught.

 

Manny Steward kept Hearns away from John Mugabi for a reason. And it wasn't just financial, since Mugabi was a box office draw.

I really believe the Mugabi of 1985 would have at least a 50% chance to win this by KO.

 

This depends entirely on what fight Hearns elects to make, if he boxes, using his speed ,and jab he wins by gradually breaking Mugabi down and stopping him late.
If he elects to," bang with a banger", he opens the door to the possibility the Beast might catch him with something heavy and ko him.
Mugabi had fast hands but stiff legs and average footwork.
Hearns is far more talented as a boxer, if he utilises that talent he wins by late stoppage.

I do not think Hearn's hit much harder than Hagler at 160 ... Hearn's was faster and more explosive out of the gate ... both were nasty punchers at 160 .. after a few rounds Hearn's power dropped significantly at 160 while Marvin carried it for 15 rounds ..

 

Pre-Hagler Mugabe turned normal swarmers like Frank "The Animal" Fletcher into timid cuties. Tommy doesn't need to shoot it out with The Beast, and I don't think he'd try. If the opportunity for a knockout appeared, Hearns would take it, but I think he'd play it safe here, since keeping his distance would be a sure path for winning. He didn't have Hagler's chin or punch resistance, but had enough height, speed and mobility to largely keep his head and body out of harm's way.
