Devasting performance The way Hearns totally obliterated two macho warriors with heretofore granite chins was awesome, His physical advantages were massive against Cuevas and Duran.
I always wondered what would have happened if Pipino could have put his hook on Tommy, I suspect Hearns gets starched.
Yes Hearns was excellent im this fight. He was also just all wrong for Cuevas, just like he was for Duran.
His Aaron Pryor fight has been around for a long time. Good fight. If Hearns could punch as an amateur he would have won. I´m pretty certain I´ve seen one of International amateur fights against a Brit or Irish fighter. Sorry can´t remember but definately not Furlano. Doesn´t mean it wasn´t broadcast and is out there somewhere.
According to an SI story, Cuevas's team had the not-so-great fight plan to let Hearns punch himself out in the first few rounds and then let Pipino go on the attack. Not a good idea to be a punching bag for Thomas Hearns until he tires. I think Cuevas's team was influenced by Hearns fight with Harold Weston. Hearns was hardly the destroyer in that fight. He seemed a little tentative and Weston fought well on the inside and was starting to take control over a wearying Hearns until the fight was stopped due to Weston's eye injury. Hearns never hurt Weston in the fight and I guess the thinking was that Pipino could also take Hearns best shots until the time came for him to attack. They thought wrong as it turned out.
Also had the wrong shoes and you could see him slip a few times. Not saying Cuevas would have won but his corner sure didn't do him any favors.
One thing that played out in this fight was the ring was VERY slick from condensation. They tried mopping it between fights but it just sloshed it around. You can see Cuevas having issues getting footing because he had regular boxing shoes and Manny Steward had Hearns wear rubber-soled shoes (maybe he knew something, what with the fight in Detroit?). Regardless, devastating performance. Oh, and speaking of game plans: Steward said after that Hearns had a three-part game plan: Try to take him out rounds 1-3; if that fails, box him from rounds 4-6; then try to take him out in 7-9. He was asked what the plan was for 10-15 and said, ‘There was no plan, because there’s no way with two punchers like those two that it was going to go past nine.’
