Thompson has one thing going for him that few know?

Ibragimov was crap but he wasn't a champion. We're still waiting for the first unification since Lewis/Holyfield.

 

Sorry Dan - I forgot you don't recognise the WBO. I don't really, but it was billed as a unification fight so I called it as such in this instance.

In reply to the previous poster, you are correct about unification fights not always ending in KO's - but how many of them have been as boring as that one?

Hit a nerve there - he wasn't techincally running, but he was doing the amateur boxing thing of jabbing and getting out of range. Bearing in mind his right hand is excellent and Ibragimov is a slow plodding chump I would have expected Wlad to 'front up' a bit more.

 

Wlad would have been forced to "front up" more if the ref had done his job correctly. People used to criticise Lewis for being a bit "safety first" but he was never involved in a fight that ****.

 

Being 'safety first' and scared are two different things, clearly.

If the ref had done his job properly then perhaps so.

I suppose there was one good thing to some out of the whole debacle - we didn't have a fat, charisma-free pudding such as Ibragimov at the top of the heavyweight tree.

 

True. How anyone can put Wlad in the same league as Lewis is beyond me. Its easy to forget how loose & good to watch Lewis was at times. That kind of confidence is something we'll never see from Wlad.

We talked about that in another thread, but you are so damn right. Ibragimov is a good guy, but he was just a beltholder.
I think unifications have become so rare in the hw division, that everyone was just glad to have a "small" unification.

I also told you abaut the hype here in germany: Some media describe Klitschko as a man, with three (!!!) belts! IBF,WBO and IBOatsch

 

Ibragimov is crap, and was crap before he lost to Wlad IMO.

Beating a shot Evander Holyfield is no way to prove you are a top notch heavyweight.

 

Even worse was his performance against Shan the man. Ibragimov fought like an a..hole, he won the fight by running away from Briggs all day long. Briggs was out of shape in the fight, Ibragimov could have done much more.

 

He drew with Ray Austin I would say he was crap.

Do you blame Lennox for Akinwande? Of course not. But there were a few things Lennox could have done differently.

And it is the same thing with the Wlad-Iggy fight. Iggy did not engage WHATSOEVER. And not only did he not engage, he either ran or crouched the ENTIRE fight.

**** happens in boxing. But the fact is the majority of Lennox and Wlad's fights were very entertaining and resulted in many vicious knockouts. It is unrealistic to ask for it every single time.

 

thing is that straight left is not the punch thompson has. it's not like he cant punch it's just that he is a right hander....a southpaw right hook maybe be very hard for wlad to get away from....but just maybe

 

did you see the fight...twas a real surpising fight. i thought it was either gonna be austin moving and using some lazy jab to keep sultan off him. and thought ibragimov was gonna swarm him using mike tyson like hooks and straights.

it was the complete opposite austin started to go for ibragimov while sultan started to counterpunch with both hands.

i know austin isnt an amazing opponant but both men showed alot of heart that night.

 

Thompson is waay too slow ... he's never been hit w/ power like Wlad's and he's never seen boxing like Wlad's ...

Wlad will dominate the fight w/ the jab ... he also can use the left hook, right hand, and uppercut w/ either hand.

 

Well, he HAS three belts, right, with two of them regarded as 'major'.
Even Johnathon Banks is apparently fighting some pizza baker for the vacant IBO cruiserweight title on July 12th. So why risk his WBO # 1 contender's position for some IBO belt? Maybe it's getting more recognizable or respected or something. Atleast it's become better known because of fighters like Hatton and Klitschko, even mr. Money himself has held the IBO welterweight belt.
I'm not saying that it's become one of the major belts, though.
