Thoughts on Pac vs Marquez 3

I didn't pick JMM to win, I said I thought he might and questioned what had changed from 2008-2011. I thought his footwork and countering could see him win. Most agreed JMM had deteriorated more and it wasn't at a weight that suited him. I thought that argument had some credence, especially when I saw his chicken legs at the weigh in. So I was pretty unsure.

I did say Marquez couldn't win a decision and Arum would likely have favourable judges. I think you'd agree the 8-4 scorecard is impossible to justify, most think the 7-5 was impossible to justify. I had JMM winning 5 of the rounds very clearly (I always denote clear/close on my card), the other 7 rounds I thought were close but thought JMM did the better work in about 3-4 of them. So were the judges objective?

As for the 2008 fight, there were close rounds and clear rounds. Marquez won more clear rounds, you could give most the close rounds to Pacquaio giving him every benefit of the doubt and maybe give him it 6-6 plus the KD. I can see it but have never scored it that way and on the balance Marquez got the better of it

As for Cotto, I shouldn't diminish the win, it's a very good 1 but ultimately he isn't as skilled as Marquez. He doesn't have the counter right hand, doesn't have as good defence, doesn't use footwork to set up counters as well. Cotto did do pretty well for 5 rounds bar the KDs though.

So would a 2009 fight be different to this? I don't think it would although Marquez did learn the right way to gain weight after gaining it wrong against FMJ. He worked hard to add it right. Maybe a better question is, does a 2011 Pacquaio do the same to Cotto? And I think he absolutely does

Let's also forget Ariza was claiming Pacquaio's conditioning was the best it had ever been and he'd blow Marquez out the water in 4 rounds

As for Mayweather I always thought he's all wrong for Pacquaio, but in truth I don't think his foot positioning and movement against southpaws is quite as good as Marquez who is a master of other things. So that alongside Pacquaio's punchers chance are glimors of hope for Pac fans

There's some back handed compliments there Pops, I think it's been a hard night for you, we should probably stop trolling each other, as fans we can get overly passionate about our favourite fighters sometimes and build up unnecessary grudges in the heat of argument

Does my rating of Marquez over Arguello seem quite as insane now? That rating was part that I saw both his LW but especially his FW tenures to be in my view very underrated.

 

I don't want to see a fourth fight, the third one finally proved that Marquez' style is a puzzle that Pacquaio can not and will not solve; Pacquaio looked lost and bewildered in there, much wary of the counterpunching threat of Marquez.

I think my brother's insight was correct; Marquez was setting traps for Pacquaio with his spacing, and Pacquaio just went for it everytime.
