I didn't realize how all of this really effected Frazier and his fam. Ali was pretty harsh, but I think his intention was to really promote. Well atleast he apologized for it.
Ali was a *****. No doubt. The crap that happened vs Ernie Terrell was proof too. He said what he wanted without thinking, he had no regard for the other person.
Pretty disturbing yet fascinating documentary. Yeah it was extremely biased towards Frazier but Ali own words made him look bad. I love the man, but there are certain lines that I feel should never be crossed. Calling Frazier a gorilla and inferior crossed the line . And Ferdie Pacheco is a vile **** of ****. :good
That doc told it like it is. Joe Frazier has gotten, and continues to get, one of the most blatant short-shrifts of any American Sporting hero.
Obviously the issue isn't black and white. Sure, Ali was an entertainer and he said a lot of crap to promote himself and his fights. Still, that doesn't excuse the nasty **** that came out of his mouth. Let's face it, he was a mean SOB, and, I think, it's fair to say that he often crossed the line. It's easy to be taken by Ali's charisma and see him as some kind of God or something, but there's a side to him that just isn't that likeable (e.g., his infidelity, the way he dehumanized his opponents, etc). And even though he berated Joe Frazier for being manipulated and a victim of his circumstances, I think it was really Ali who was the one being manipulated and used: by the nation of Islam to help spread their message. Perhaps, if we think about it in this way, we can excuse some of the nonsense that came out of his mouth; he was just naive and ignorant.
Ali's the one walking around braindead... Smokin' Joe had the last word. Ali payed for his insults rightfully, the son of a *****. Well Frazier won the first fight, Ali should have been DQ'd the second fight, and the third fight he was about to pull out (apparently)....
I've seen this documentary and Ali went down in my estimations a lot after watching it. You can understand why Frazier is still bitter after all these years.
Ali not only spewed his racist crap about Joe but to everyone. There is a part in the documentary where they compare the things he said in speeches as being no different than what the KKK was saying. Ali wasnt a very good loser either, after Joe beat his ass in the first fight he refused to accept it, said it was a white mans decision. And then after all the abuse he inflicts on Joe and his family he doesnt even have the balls to apoligize to joe personally? Lets not forget that even Floyd Patterson, a true gentleman, refused to call him Ali because he felt he had so much hatred for other black fighters he didnt deserve it!
