I don't mind catchweights, especially as it allows two boxers who are in different weight classes to step into the ring with each other on a near enough even playing field. However, I don't believe a title should be on the line when a catchweight is in place. And I know a lot of people argue, if it is within the range of the weight class (e.g. 140-147)...it is allowed. But the boxer who holds the belt, say at Welterweight...usually has the option to come weigh-in at any weight within that range. I don't see that as an even playing field...if you want to collect a title at the weight above, get rid of the catchweight and allow the champion to weigh-in at his usual weight. Another argument for these catchweights is, lets say both boxers (the boxer moving up from 140lbs, and the boxer at 147lbs) both have the WBC belts from their respective weight class. If the boxer moving up from 140lbs enforces a catchweight of 142lbs...but also asks for the champion at 147lbs to have his title on the line. I don't see this as fair, or an even playing field at all. Why not argue that both titles should be on the line because of the catchweight, and how the champion at 147lbs is giving up an extra 5lbs at weigh-in, but also has to put his title on the line? The champ at 140lbs (if he weighs-in at 140lbs usually) only has to put on an extra 2lbs, has nothing to lose, but if he wins...he gains another belt at a higher weight class. I know this will never happen, but you could argue it.
catchweight are fine as long as both fighters agreed to it. it was designed so that a fighter moving up to a heavier fighters weight will not be severely disadvantaged.
Sugar Ray Leonard once fought for a SMW and LHW belt in the same fight. Toney certainly always followed Bradley's mantra of 'go the extra mile, gain the extra pounds' Except he sometimes did it before moving up a weight, like weighing in 5lbs overweight for a LHW title fight. Yeah, there's an example to follow... Joners insisted on a catchweight against Green. Didn't do him much good...
Toney is dirty like many Roach fighters. Roy Jones DRANK some over the counter crap that doesn't work anyway.
I have no problem with catchweights, sometimes certain fights need to happen and people want to see them but weight can be an issue so this is another option available. If both fighters agree then we have no issue, I find it hilarious how anyone would pretend to be a fighter's representative here and claim weight is an issue for this fight or that, if the fighter his self agreed and didn't say he has any issue about it after the fight then it wasn't an issue. These jokers claiming Cotto being at a catchweight against Pac was an issue are idiots. Cotto isn't necessarily shy when it comes to these things and when he was struggling at 140 he openly admitted the need to move up because weight was an issue, for this fight he opened up recently ONCE AGAIN, because idiots made this topic popular, and said weight wasn't an issue at all.
I doubt it...Fanny hasn't done **** at 140 exept beat a dead man. Fanny won't go near a Black American fighter.:deal
The problem I had with this bout was not the catchweight, fair enough they agreed to it. It was when Pacquiao's team demanded Cotto's title be on the line after (as far as I am aware) all negotiations had been agreed. Cotto was unfairly backed into a corner, and as a result lost his title...the title Pacquiao's team didn't want during negotiations.
