There is quite a paper trail of "he said she said" on that one, like with the proposed Dempsey Wills bout. Also, as with the proposed Dempsey Wills bout, a fight was scheduled but never took place. It is getting late now and I need my beauty sleep, but tomorrow I will dig out some articles.
My hunch is that Ryan might have thought better of fighting Walcott who was avoided from welterweight to heavyweight at the time. There are some indications to the contrary though. Damn shame it never took place either way. It would be almost impossible to predict a winner. The fight came closest to happening at middleweight. I would merely say that Ryan generaly had a pretier record vs the same opponents while Walcott was matched harder and had a deeper resume.

So we know that green - listed as having had only something like 10 fights on boxrec - was highly regarded by his contemporaries, here are some snippets of his title fight with Ryan which seems to indicate the two were near matched for skills and it was Ryan's superior athleticism, smarts and conditioning that won the day. "It took Ryan 18 rounds to dispose of Green tonight...it was an exhibition of beautiful boxing...the advantage alternated until the 13th round when Ryan's superior stamina began to tell. He was the most effective at close range from that pointon and his left jabs on the face and shortarm right-hand blows to the body took the life out of [Green]...Ryan's superior ring generalship helped him to win the fight. He allowed Green to tire himself out early on [a sign of many of the great pre-B Leonard lightweights I think, you had to be good and special to box safe under these conditions for long enough for it to take it's toll on your man without suffering heavy punishment] and came with a rush at the finish. "Green put up a game fight. He is a first class and clever man."" Ryan also complained of having been unwell the day before this fight. Green comes across as aggressive, clever and quick.

Tommy Ryan?? Watching the filmed interview with him from 1927.... he seems a very muddled old man. Great record none the less.
