Toney's fought against DKP opponents before, it's how be got the WBA HW title fight with John Ruiz. I think Toney's desperate for a title fight or anything big at this point of his career, I don't count him out signing with DKP.
Well, it looks like the fight won't happen anyway as Minto is scheduled to fight Greer on 17Th April.
Let's hope that he gets at least co-promoted by DKP like in the past. An agreement with King would give his career a much needed boost. I highly doubt that his newly founded company "lights out promotions" has the necessary the connections to get some kind of an eliminator in the near furure...
With Brewster having signed with Sauerland promotions in Germany I doubt that Toney would fight him over there any time soon
So can we say that Brian Minto ducked Toney? only joking - but man it's frustrating seeing Toney being so inactive again, the more so now that he finally seems to be in somewhat acceptable shape... he should step into the ring with anyone, why not even a rematch with Batchelder? It would lead him nowhere but at least he'd stay active...
I agree here - again. Toney should at least keep active in order to both keep his weight down and create some hype around his person again. Fighting every 2 months even against 2nd tier opposition -yes, why not rematching Batchhelder as their 1st fight was very disputed - would also ,at least to some degree prove, what Toney has left in the tank...
As planed, Toney should fight in May in order to keep or improve his rankings in the sanctioning bodies. A keep busy fight against Batchelder would be acceptable although Toney looks fit and ready for bigger and better things.
James looked like dog **** in his last fight. It's Brian's time to shine, but he'll get screwed on the scorecards even if he outboxes Toney.
Alright so the names are dwindling down to a very few. How about Vinny Madalone? Madalone is actually well known (by super duper journeyman standards) in the NY area so perhaps Vinny vs Toney isn't exactly out of the realm of possibility.
Problem is that a lot of people do not want to face Jt because he his old school and a difficult style to deal with. That list includes top young fighters like Chambers, Povetkin, Areola.
James is definitely avoided by the young top rated guard of the hw division. I think that this speaks volumes about the safety first approach of some contenders. These young lions have everything to again in a fight with an ATG like Toney! Based on his disappointing showing against Oquendo, Toney did indeed look very beatable at this point of his career.
The fact is Minto wont fight him. Tony isn't (A) A slow white guy. (B) Got 15 L on his record. (C) Coming off a 8 year layoff. (D) A Slow white guy. Minto wont fight anyone that can give him problems at this point. He is going to try and take the easy road to one more payday.
Now to be fair to Brian Minto, he was considered the underdog against Schulz. Schulz was considered a fairly talented HW back in the day and he's very popular in Germany, Minto's just a somewhat decent journeyman and was supposed to be nothing more than a tune-up fight for Schulz's comeback. And Minto would have been owned if it hadn't been for Schulz totally ****ing up that night.
Vinny Maddalone would be the perfect comeback/showcase fight for Toney. Maddalone stays in front of you and is a brawler and that is exactly the fighter Toney thrives on.
