Tua too much for Toney. A mismatch Toney stands a slight boxer's chance at winning by a close decision . Toney's chin was #1 all time p4p , but Tua is a h2h monster puncher that can end it with 1 punch vs everyone , unlike Foreman & Tyson.

Toney deep out of his weightclass in this one. Good thing it never happened.
Same for Toney vs. a Klitschko and Tua vs a Klitschko.
There's a reason to why McCall did better than Tua vs both Lewis and Maskaev , although Tua did better vs Oquendo and Darroll Willson.
    That reason is called range.
Toney will not be able to hit Tua from long range , and may have been be doomed if he decided to trade , he could have outscored Tua , but once he tires , those punches he just could not take . A really on target fully loaded flush punch from Tua can finish everyone within his reach and Toney will be within that reach .
And btw , those who suggest Peter and Tua were somehow nearly equal in terms of punching power are really s****ed total loss

Peak Tua ('96 Ruiz to '97 Ibeabuchi) was quite a machine. I just assumed you were talking about the Past-Prime, but well conditioned Tua who fought Byrd in '01, when you said 233lbs.

tough fight. Toney cannot be hit by that left hook. He took Peters punch, but Tua is a little different. I pick Toney but barely. By UD.

Good point, Rahman said in '98 he just had to watch Tua's left shoulder, to see him loading-up with his big telegraphed lefthook. Toney would also do this, & counter Tua every time his started to load-up.

yeah I agree. And if Rahman said this, what would Toney see. Other guys could avoid the left so Toney could. Although I do think Tua was a good trainer away from finding ways to get that punch in at time when he couldn't. Against Lennox, Tua was in over his head against a big fast guy, but against Toney he would have Toney on the ropes often enough and if he worked low and then came up he could land it eventually if he had a trainer who could devise a plan to set it up. But in all likelyhood Toney would win a decison.

At one point Tua was close to being trained by Kevin Rooney. It's a shame it never happened, as Rooney would've been perfect for improving Tua, in terms of conditioning, defensive & offensive skills, & giving him superb corner advice suited for the situation.

Tua, hits much harder than Peters imo. Peters power is overrated 2bh, whereas Tua, if/when he lands, its normally bye bye, ive never really though too much of peters power

    Who Nex.

No ****ing way I would be laying a cent on any version of Tua against Toney. You'd have to be crazy. It would be an uglier fatter version of the Byrd fight. Tua is not figuring this guy out and he isn't going to rally and overwhelm him late. My money is on the boxer.

Peter beat Toney in the rematch because he actually developed a good long jab for that one, keeping his distance, and not giving Toney the range to counter; pretty much fighting like a quicker version of Rahman. Tua isn't duplicating that, I don't care how hard his telegraphed left hook is.

yeah maybe so. Someone to get Tua some form to set up the left when the guys were defensive. His knockouts over Moorer and Ruiz were devastating.

Toney could be lazy and had to carry a lot of weight as a heavyweight and fought in spots. He was basically fighting the same type of fighter as himself in Holyfield who also could only fight in spots, but was slower and more shot. Tua in shape would beat him just with activity and punch output.

I agree James came out of shape sometimes, but even fighting lazy he was so much better than Tua.

In shape Tua was still getting outboxed by Maskeev and Rahman though

You ever work around Tua LH31?

Tua was a dangerous puncher to the body and with the lefthook. It would be difficult for James to operate like he usually does. Toney doesnt move around alot, the fight would be in close quarters so Toney would be susceptible to getting hit a lot. Yes he was leagues better than Tua, but I see a bad stylistic matchup for Toney, because hes not going to move and try and strand Tua on the end of his jab like most of the fighters who gave him trouble did.

it would have been interesting. I agree it is a bad style matchup and a terrible one if Tua fights the way he could and works the body with his left hook. I remember Peter blasting Toney to the body and James didn't seem to be affected much. Obviously he was not showing it, but he had a great pain threshold it seems. If Tua worked the body and came upstairs James would be in big trouble. I agree.
