Why so many successful white Junior Welters aka Super Light Weights? Are whites just biologically more suited for that weight, is welterweight prejudice against whites?
It is kind of weird that the upper ranks of the junior welterweight division have been so ethnically and geographically diverse over the past 30 years, whereas the top welterweights have been so disproportionately black and Latino/Latin American.
James Hughes was a badass in the late 80s-early 90s. He was TOUGH AS NAILS This content is protected He was murdered in 1995 and was close to a title shot at the time. He held the USBA Welterweight title and had wins over Nick Rupa, Adrian Stone and Anthony Stephens. He lost decsions to James "Buddy" McGirt and Maurice Blocker.
In the US, we don't really count anyone from south of the US as white unless it's an usual case like the children of Germans who moved to whatever South American country.
What? I mean directly south as in central and South American. Spaniards are considered white in the US.

Did you complain about the white heavyweights thread too? Just curious. PS - Even though Americans for decades now have been fond of pretending and insisting that they don't "see race," race remains a bit more socially salient and readily discernible than blood type and horoscope signs...
No, that was someone else. Making smartass remarks in both threads would be a bit extraneous... but one seems just right. Wisecracks aside, I guess I just sincerely don't quite grasp why this question is interesting to you. And I don't mean that with any subtext of reproach, just neutral puzzlement.
I'm generally interested in the changes (demographic, physical, stylistic, tactical, etc.) that have occurred in the sport over time. This thread was in part a reaction to the "white heavyweight" thread though, a thread topic that seemed pretty redundant given that posters here already disproportionately post about top white heavyweights. I was curious whether the many posters who were fine with that thread would have a different reaction to a post on white fighters in a different division. That, and I was genuinely surprised that there weren't at least a handful of obvious names from the past 30-60 years, so I was interested in which new and interesting names might get mentioned.
Urkal gave Tszyu a tough time. Michelle beat Spinks. Zaveck won and defended a belt but didn't beat anyone good. Taylor did very little.
How about Packey McFarland, Mike Gibbons and the most underrated forgotten white Welterweight of all time Frankie Schoell? Packey McFarland beat Jack Britton. Gibbons Vs McFarland was a draw @ welterweight. The Eastside Dutchman Frankie Schoell was so avoided at Welterweight he had to fight middleweights like Tiger Flowers conceding weight and still got a draw. That’s how good he was. Dave shade had his number before he peaked, but victories over Pete Latzo and Jack Britton a year after he lost his title are standout performances. A damn shame he’s forgotten by even most boxing historians Schoell makes the Top 5 no doubt about it
