It's funny - quitting is a massive stigma in boxing, but fans seem to be selective in how and when they enforce the unwritten rule of it being cardinal sin. Case in point: Popo Freitas, warrior for more than 90% of his career...but has a couple of episodes of "discretion is the better part of valor" and he's branded a gutless quitter forevermore. Victor Ortiz, however, bottles it every bit as bad as Popo ever did against Maidana and then essentially commits seppuku against Mayweather by leaving himself wide open to a kayo 2-piece...but he's given a free pass and still embraced by most. Vitali Klitschko against Byrd - swept under the rug. Unimportant. :think Obviously Hamer is getting more the Freitas treatment.
time will tell, if Hamer manages to bounce back im sure we will all forget it was bizarre did he quit for a good reason, they didnt interview him and find out if he was injured or anything, ive seen no follow up looked like he just had enough after not really looking on the verge of KO'd in his other loss did he do the same thing?
Why did Ortiz get forgiven so quickly? It was less than a year before the Maidana debacle was "out of sight, out of mind". I'm not sure anybody outside rabid K2 haters ever held Byrd against Klitschko. Why are fans such cherry-pickers when it comes to leading the torch mob against quitters? :think
Ortiz got forgiven when he didnt quit and hung in with Berto...his crowd pleasing style and weird antics make him fun to watch cause theres mystery, though his last fight doesnt help him shake off the quitter image Vitali had a legitament injury that i think most fans could see as reasonable but didnt Vitali not really get featured on HBO much until Lennox...The Lewis fight repaired the **** out of his image Hamer gets strikes agaisnt him because there didnt seem like a clear injury, hes not a fan favorite, and i doubt many had ever seen him fight i know i probably sound like a ***** but i guess its just the way it works
Liston and Duran proved themselves over a **** load of grueling fights, liston fought through with a broken jaw, strange comparison.... Not to mention the liston ali fights are real suspect. I didnt knock the dude I said its not for anybody. This early in his career when he wasnt getting dominated is a sign its time to go use that college degree
True. Nor is it for the guy in your avatar. Tor should go to Goldman Sax.. Meanwhile Judah should be a go-getter for some gang, and alternatively he could be in the Pluto suit as Disneyland if he played his cards right.
Most boxers endure much more before deciding to end matters. My take is that he lost confidence, felt he was going to get stopped and didn't want to go out in that manner. Most boxers are willing to push through much more and are willing to risk a brutal loss to get a win. Hamer wasn't willing to do that. Does it make him a bad guy? Of course not. But I think his mindset will diminish any hopes he had at boxing at atop level. Fighters have to go through various levels of adversity in many of their fights but if a solid 3 punch combination can change someone's mind, boxing is the wrong field for him. I do think coming up hard or soft can make a big difference on one's ring demeanor and we all know Hamer was an educated, upper middle class kid.
It's only a bachelors... It isn't like the world is his oyster. If he can make a living boxing and has the skills, why shouldn't he continue? He will need to find some intestinal fortitude if he's to approach the top level again, obviously.
That is my take as well. Unless we hear about an injury soon, we can assume he just didn't want to get knocked out in the 2nd half and felt it was increasingly likely that he would.
It's understandable if the fighter quits due to injury. Harder to understand quitting when there's no injury and you're still in the fight :huh
ortiz (vs MM) was floored twice, had blood coming out of every side of his face, was taking huge shots from a guy with 95% KO ratio....Tor Hamer quit before a fight even broke out.....thats when quitting has 2 different scenarios
