Trainer argument Pernell whitaker vs floyd mayweather 140 and 147

Whitaker is like Floyd except shorter, a southpaw, and just more awesome.

 

^ bottom line . just go back and watch the judah fight. Pernell would box the hell out of Floyd. Floyd's not in his best element against a southpaw - even then Pernel is more complete and better boxer.

 

mayweather isn't gonna get inside sweetpeas head

pea isn't gonna stand there letting floyd tee off on him and he isn't gonna fight uneconomically

i see pea winning a 9-3 type victory maybe dropping floyd along the way with an offguard shot

I'd expect this fight to happen at 135 lb as that was the best weight for both fighters. I've always thought Mayweather would win a close decision. My thought is that Mayweather has a better all round game. Especially offensively he is much more unorthodoxed. Pernell is the better defender but I think he would have a harder time scoring on Mayweather then Mayweather scoring on him.

You guys also have to remember floyd is a shell of what he used to be. Look at the guy who beat the **** out of Hernandez and dominated corales. That's the guy that whittaker would have to deal with. Same guy that fought castillo i know but my point is the speed, power, reflexes and foot work were all good enough to match sweat pea.

 

This thread needs to be made 10 years from now, because boxing heads (both on here and in general) never give active fighters the respect they're due when compared to great fighters from the past. IMO, Mayweather UD in a close fight.

 

Ya I know. But to be frank time often does strange things as well and can warp the truth just as often as it can make things more clear. Back when sweat pea was fighting it was hard enough to convince people sweat pea was a better fighter then Tyson. Now its Tyson was **** and whittaker is p4p greatest light weight of all time. The truth of course is somewhere in the middle for both fighters. I think Floyd will never get the respect he deserves until he bleeds for the fans....which i doubt he`ll do.

 

Floyd eventually finds a home for that overhand right.

Floyd is without question one of the absolute best of all time. only a couple stand with Jr and thats because the longer it goes the better you become. upeople are phukin clueless when trying to compare fighter from yesterday, yesteryear and today..

how would mayweather have done against the delahoya that pernell fought?

pernell was past his best when he fought oscar and many thought he won that fight.

also...floyd had difficulty with emanuel augustus who was slick and slippery...but no where near the level of pernell whitaker.

sweetpea would have beat floyd. i don't need to wait 10yrs to figure that out.

the match up between pernell and floyd is mythical. it's not a possible fight so there is no right answer. we can only speculate.

as for what floyd did to pernell in the gym...this is the first i've ever heard about it...and pernell was at the end of his career when zab started training with him so i can't give it that much merit. plus...if i'm going on your flawed logic...if floyd handled pernell in the gym then spadafora must be better than floyd too, huh?

the thing that some of you youngins need to realize is that i have forgotten more about boxing than u will ever know.

pernell is an all time great who took on huge challenges past his prime.

would floyd have ever fought a guy like dlh in his prime 2-3 weight classes above his best?

would floyd have ever fought a guy like trinidad in the same situation?

make no mistake about it...floyd does have skill...but when it comes to taking on real challenges and daring to be great...he's NEVER stepped up to the plate like the GREAT PERNELL SWEETPEA WHITAKER. truth be told....having watched pernell since the amateurs...he should have been undefeated up until the trinidad fight. politics got the better of him. beating guys like chavez in his prime and delahoya when he was an undefeated hungry lion are the stuff that atg's are made of.

floyd is the best of this era. that's not saying much. pernell is an ATG. learn the difference.
