Trainers: One Hit Wonders

Let's discuss some one hit wonder trainers who, though they achieved great success with one fighter, are overall more luck than ability.

Virgil Hunter - His speedy descent to irrelevancy can't go fast enough. Andre Ward made Andre Ward, Virgil at best kept a young kid on the right path. He's on the border of not knowing **** about boxing. He is a bizarre looking weirdo who constantly tries to sound like an old school jazz cat. At one point he had a stable full of fighters who were former champs or challengers. Sure, they were all technically flawed in different ways, but what did Virgil do about that? He whispered in their ears as they went out and showcased the same flaws that brought them to Virgil in the first place.

Freddie Roach - Roach taught Pacquiao how to use a right hook. Thus concludes Freddie's list of accomplishments. Pacquiao is an all time great who happened to walk into Roach's gym as he began to build a name in the US. The things that make Pacquiao great are not coachable attributes. His insane speed and power, his instinct for strange punches and angles. Roach can hold pads and speak fractured English to a guy who is still learning the language, but he is not a great trainer. He taught Provodnikov nothing, pawning him off on some assistant. Freddie is media hype that he has worked very hard to create. I pray we have no more of Freddie's "I'm actually a tough guy you know" moments at another press conference.

There are many more but these two were easy.

You should remove Freddie Roach, he's more than proven his merit as a trainer. I agree about Hunter, he's really, truly not a good trainer at all.

Alton Merkeson is the epitome of a one hit trainer, he just so happened to be in the corner
of likely the most physically gifted boxer in history in Roy Jones.

Are Enzo Calzaghe and Angel Garcia 'one hit wonders' because they only led thier sons to stardom?

I don't think you could class either of them as great trainers.

I would actually say in the cases of Father-Son pairings, merit can be given IF the son ends up very technically sound. As clearly bad as Mayweather Sr. is for ANYONE, he, coupled with Rog, may have a case at being great trainers as they taught Floyd to be a pure technician.

Joe Calzaghe is not a technician.
