Which world class fighters did Galento beat during 1937 to enter the Ring ratings at #5 by the end of that year? None.

If he beat fighters who were ranked then presumably they were world class.

Even if we accept such approach... which is highly questionable, to say the least, due to accidental fighters getting ranked from time to time.

Which fighters, that he beat during 1937, were ranked?

Ettore wasn't ranked anymore, after finishing 1936 at #8 and then losing twice to light-heavyweight champion.

Haynes just lost twice to unranked fighters, Knox and Olin were unranked too, so I believe he wasn't in Top 10 anymore either by this point.

So Galento beat zero world-class or ranked fighters, yet finished the year at #5?

I think that Haynes and Mann were both ranked when Gallento beat them.

In any event it is quite possible to get a top 5 ranking without beating a top 10 fighter.

Ettore was clearly world class even if he was no longer ranked.

Of course you can set some arbitrary definition of world class and decide that you are going to exclude fighter A, B or C on some pretext but that is hardly sound practice.

Things were a little different back then, though.

Today you're only as good as your last fight. Back then, top fighters fought each other regularly , so losing once or twice didn't evaporate any standing you had. Ettore, Haynes and Mann likely were still regarded as good fighters and considering Galento went through all of them, i don't think it's unreasonable to rank him. Maybe #5 was a bit high, but certainly top10.

Ettore's stock might have gone up with his series with Lewis. He fought him to a draw, lost a majority decision with the fight close enough to lead to a third big outdoor match, in which he lost a unanimous decision. These performances were probably considered very impressive against one of the best fighters in the world.

Galento might have gotten, as Suzie-Q suggests, some extra milage in the rankings for his victories over Haynes, Pack, and other black heavyweights whom many of the top white contenders were avoiding. That many white heavies steered clear of tough black opponents was understood even back then.

    Mann was almost certainly ranked.

I'm almost certain, based on Haynes' position in previous year's rankings, and his two losses to unranked fighters, and two wins over also unranked fighters, that he wasn't in Top 10 anymore.

When did Galento beat Mann in 1937, a fight I'm not aware of?

Ettore was of the same "world class" as the "world class" of Jim Flynn when he knocked out Dempsey? Ettore wasn't of world class any longer, and I would be hard pressed to call him world class heavyweight at any point of his career, this term should be reserved for much better fighters.

They were not considered impressive, based on fight reports I've read of his two losses, and there is no mention of Ettore being ranked in reports of these two fights or of Galento fight. Yes, Ettore carried the fight to Lewis, but he was outboxed, and was knocked down twice and barely survived.

Pardon me? When did I talk about Sanders' rating in the 1990s?
