Great post, a pleasure to read. Yeah, I agree about the money angle. Rooney was just a sub for Atlas, who was Tyson's first trainer. I think they would have forges a great relationship in the pro ranks together.
If atlas is upset because Tyson didn't share his earnings then that is another matter but it's hard to take teddy objectively when he starts taking pot shots at Tyson for every x, y, z reason and starts bad mouthing him in the media, making up stories about Tyson being a quitter when he trained him, if this was the case then why didn't he reveal these things back then when he was training him? Tyson went to jail for a **** conviction which looked flawed, he has paid his debt and teddy should now be the bigger man and let it go especially since Tyson took the initiative to make amends with him
"Why didn't he reveal these things .?" He did. Nobody was listening back then, just like you aren't listening now. By the way, Larry Holmes predicted publicly that Tyson would destroy himself, and that is exactly what happened.
Its really the thing with the niece that's the main reason he was upset with him. As a fan of Teddy's I have to admit that there's no doubt he has (or at least had, up until the recent reconciliation) a hatred for both Cus and Tyson (though, again, if you read my previous post, I'm sure none of us can say we wouldn't be absolutely beside ourselves with fury, all things considered) that goes to such a degree that it may bias him. You can see it when he talks about Tyson publicly, you can read it from the tone in which he talks about the two of them in his autobiography. He really dislikes them. That said, he also seems to try to be fair to Cus in his autobiography as he praises him often and says it is undeniable he was a near genius as a trainer. And you can see in this video that he was gracious enough to come speak on Cus' behalf for his induction into the New York boxing hall of fame and say some very nice things about him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXAW-bMt0rw He did reveal these things when he was training him. He talks about it in a few documentaries from the time. For ex. here at 18:32: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlQ4OzlZ4MQ You can see there, in the scene that follows Teddy saying what he says, that Tyson clearly had a very rough time facing pressure and competition, and I think that by that point he was already a two time national champion so you'd think he'd have gotten accustomed to it. And Mike has talked about this stuff himself, how he didn't have confidence before Cus worked on him and how tough fighting in the ring was for him early on. Are you referring to something specific he said? Because, I don't think he has said bad things about Tyson since they've patched it up. I just saw this interview with Radio Rahim and he said he accepted Mike's apology and didn't say anything bad (its in the last 1/3 of the video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odkIdmgz_bI
Great posts. I would have never moved on from someone touching a young family member of mine. Don't blame teddy at all. You don't have to like teddy but recognize that he is a great spokesmen for the sport and the fans should love him for calling it how it is and trying to clean up the sport.
All you guys that slate Teddy have almost certainly never met him. Yeah he's eccentric he tends to lose it at times BUT When he does he is usually dead right. When he says the boxing judges that come up with off the wall scorecards should be dragged into the commission office to watch a tape of the fight & explain their decision. Only trouble with that is many of the boxing commissions are just as crooked as their officials Teddy eats sleeps & most of all LOVES boxing. If they made an International Boxing Commission He would be my pick to run it He'd straighten the crooks out Teddy was right about Tyson too Cus let him get away with murder almost he knew his potential as a fighter that's all he cared about. Today Mike has turned his life around he looks happier now than I've ever seen him before I wish him All the best for a long & happy life ahead
