They aren't as bad as people say

Well, Thompson and Chambers aren't. I agree it's not really fitting for any ATG though. Still, not Wlad's fault...

I'd pick Thomas, Tucker, Biggs and an old Larry Holmes over all of them.

I think a late '80s Holmes cleans out the current HW division...

Very fair assessment. I agree, but do I think Biggs was a good fighter. Only point we disagree on.

OK, well first off let's take a look at his record.

    He fought 56 fights.
    He won 50 times.
With 44 of his wins coming by knockout.
Losing only 6fights with 5 by knockout.

In his loss to Buster Douglas he wasn't training.
    He was partying.
And had been dropped in sparring.
He had to go on a crash diet to make the weight, and still came in at a career high.
    His best years were 1986 - 1988.

This fight took place in 1990.
After Tyson had fired Kevin Rooney and Bill Cayton.
And Cus D'amato and Jimmy Jacobs had already died.
So basically, all four of the people that molded him into a great fighter, teaching him the Peek - A - Boo style were gone.

Instead Tyson had people like Don King whispering in his ear saying "Don't worry Mike, we'll take care of everything. You do what you like!"

He then took sustained punishment while unfit to fight to a phenom in Buster Douglas.

He lost to Evander Holyfield one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time in 1996, many years past his prime.

Holyfield cheated against Tyson routinely, and would not stop headbutting Iron Mike.
    The referee did absolutely nothing!

    His loss to Lennox Lewis.

Lewis was closer to his prime than Tyson was.
It was 2002, more than a decade past Tyson's prime.
Tyson was in and out of prison.
And instead of training was smoking cannabis.

I don't even need to get into his other losses! :-(

He fought, and defeated the following:

James Tillis: A very good contender.
Mitch Green: A very good contender.
    Marvis Frazier: A solid gatekeeper.
    Jose Ribalta: A solid gatekeeper.
Trevor Berbick: Heavyweight champion of the world. A class B fighter.
James Bonecrusher Smith: Heavyweight champion of the world. A class A fighter.
Pinklon Thomas: One of the best of the era.
Tony Tucker: Undefeated. Heavyweight champion of the world. One of the best of the era.
Tyrell Biggs: Undefeated. Very solid contender.
Larry Holmes: One of the greatest heavyweights of all time. He was still a great fighter, despite misinformed opinions and claims.
Tony Tubbs: One of the best of the era.
Michael Spinks: Undefeated. Besides Tyson, the best of the era!
    Frank Bruno: Very solid contender.
    Carl Williams: Very solid contender.
    Henry Tillman: Good fighter.
Donovan Ruddock: Canadian heavyweight champion, one of the best of the era.
Buster Mathis Jr.: Undefeated. Very solid contender.
Bruce Seldon: Very underrated, but solid contender.
Francois Botha: Very underrated, but solid contender. The man is still winning fights today, even!
    Lou Savarese: Very solid contender.
    Brian Nielsen: Very good fighter.
    Clifford Etienne: Very solid gatekeeper.

Not to mention that Iron Mike Tyson was the youngest heavyweight champion of all time, cleaned out the division, and unified the belts twice!

Do I have to say more!? He was one of the best in a *SHOCKING!*:shock::shock::shock::shock: VERY STRONG ERA!

I agree, I think the 1980's HW era is being underrated. It was a strong era with some real good fighters. It was followed by a great era in the 1990's with some great fights and great fighters. Be objective people.

The fighters you've named had peaks between 1980 and around 2000. 20 years is not an era!

If you consider Berbick a B fighter, what do you consider Savarese and Nielsen? Also, I wish people wouldn't make excuses for Tyson against Douglas, his lack of discipline is his own fault, and any young fighter that tends to lack discipline out of the ring is also liable to lack mental fortitude + discipline inside it.

One other thing: Bonecrusher Smith was never a top fighter. Ever. Marvis bloody Frazier was closer to being one.

You can't school me, Brian Gumbel. You don't know **** about boxing. You got your bias ass views, but know little about the actual sport. You're obviously an idiot if you think Tyson fought in a weak division compared to today's.

Why don't you pick some dumbass topic and attempt to 'school' me at it. Your ***** ass probably never even been in the ring.

    I'll tell you what....

For this week's fights, we get involved in this thing. If you somehow beat me, I'll STFU and put up any signature or avatar you want me to. Or, if you're man enough, let's put some money up. Say, $100.
