No fighters ever make excuses for losing, especially after getting stopped in the first round. Watch the fight, looks like Spoon got hurt by the very first punch of the fight and never recovered. Maybe mentally he wasnt there but the winner was to get a million bucks supposedly against Tyson. Starting over in a division completely controlled by King doesnt seem like a feasible excuse. I know Tim personally Im going to send him an email right now. I'll post his response.
I'm hoping to have an interview locked-up by this time next week. He's a known good-guy in the sport.
He will tell you his children. He is very proud of his children. He has four daughters and of course his son who is pro fighter. Very nice guy, laid back dude. He reminds me of James Douglas similar personalities and thats kind of par for the course for their respective careers. You get a different feeling being around a Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson.
One thing I know about fighters is they make excuses as much as anyone else. Theres never a perfect training camp or road to a fight, so its really easy to find a reason why something went wrong if it doesnt go their way. Thats part of the reason why they say the sport is 99% mental. So much of it falls on that, you can be physically the most talented athelete in the world, but if you're mentally weak forget it. Look at Evander Holyfield going into the Tyson fight. There was basically two people on the planet who gave him a chance to win. (Ron Borges became famous for picking Holyfield:yep) He started training camp getting his ass kicked by David Tua and Gary Bell in sparring. Every single interview he did leading up to the fight was someone telling him he had no chance and was going to get seriously hurt. Most people start to believe it. Evander Holyfield has to be one of the strongest fighters mentally, and that compensated for his lack of size.
Wait Spoon was in his prime in 1987? Too me he looked like a drugged up out of shape ruined fighter by 1987. He actually possessed MAN TIDDIES in his title fight with frank bruno, where he had absolutley no muscle tone anymore. I think Spoon would have been crucifiied by tyson in 87. Spoon who actually had muscle defintion and was trim back in 83-84 would have been a tougher task. If your concerned about tyson beating a "Young" Prime Alpha champion..Then take Tony Tucker. Tucker was also undefeated, tall, durable, talented and posed a stylistic issue for tyson.
Hey RW, how did you see the Holmes vs Witherspoon fight ? I thought Larry won a clear but competitive fight but i know there are other people that believe Spoon won. I do feel that performances is a bit overrated, i mean how many people bring up the Carl Williams fight against Holmes ? that was much closer than Snipes and Witherspoon imo.
Then he wins a wide decision. Tim would have been a good fight, but in all likelihood he'd be a highlight reel. Esp in 1987.
Correct. There is a good chance the fight was fixed. I wonder if the odds shifted toward Smith's favor a day or two before the fight? In addition Witherpsoon's home was robbed on the same night he lost in the first round to Smith. So we have a guy wanting to escape Don King, a guy with a good chin going out in round 1, and a guy having his home robbed on the same night as if to say, don't screw with us.
