UFC 131 is not an all heavyweight card, and having 3 heavyweight bouts on one card is not unheard of. If I had seen the rumored fight card as a whole, I would not have wondered. I just happened to look it up when Lesnar vs Dos Santos was first announced. I saw Lesnar vs Dos Santos mentioned first. Then I saw that Dave Herman was looking at this card for his UFC debut. The next fight I saw rumored was Carwin vs Kongo. The rumored lighter weight bouts were not mentioned until later. It seems as though the heavyweight bouts were the main focus before working on the rest of the card. Probably..they should put on more heavyweight bout. I like the dos santos-lesnar fight and the carwin-kongo fight is very interesting. This should be fun to watch.
I think Dana realized he dropped the ball when it came to the HW's I'm sure he doesn't want to let his HW division to go stale.
Don't see it to be honest..plenty of shows have multiple bouts in the same weigh class - for example UFC 126 having both Jones-Bader and Griffin-Franklin or UFC 129. I think its just two things happening at the same time - the TUF coaches battle and the return of Carwin from injury. The Dave Herman fight is irrelevant to how their positioning the card - its clearly going to be a prelim. And I am astounded that people can say the UFC heavyweight division has gotten stale. You personally may not enjoy but it had a bumper year last year and after getting over the hump of several injuries has three big matches on the docket for May and June. Its doing fine.
To the hardcore fan, SF is now competative because the winner of their GP will be the best MMA in the world. UFC need to put on at least 4 or 5 fights in the next few months to re-establish their HW division. Brock vs JDS and Carwin vs Kongo and Mir vs Nelson is a start.
Mir-Cro Cop? Lesnar running from strikes like a battered housewife? Carwin's lack of gas? Todd Duffe getting ktfo by a love tap? And Cheick Kongo..... Thank God for Cain and JDS. Nelson earns an honourable mention for his heart in the JDS fight and Struve is improving but not top level yet Not as bad as some make it out to be but hardly bumper
Im not sure if you are referencing my post FJ but I'll answer anyway.Im just being honest. Im hardly a UFC hater if you looks at my posts Strikforce's tourney is the last hurrah for fighters like Arlovski, Fedor and Josh. But Big Foot, Reem and Werdum are the future of that division, not too shabby. And for the record apart from Reem who hasnt really faced a heaveyweigh with a top ground game to nulify his striking, which was a weakness in his 205 days along with his chin.I cant see Werdum taking him down, maybe Big Foot would have more success in that aspect. The future looks brighter for the UFC with the 4 I mentioned earlier.
I just get annoyed when people constantly **** on UFC's heavyweight division, despite what I consider a stellar year in 2010. We all know everyone loves to hate Brock, but Carwin made a simple mistake, Todd Duffee was overpromoted and Cain and Dos Santos are leading the line up. I just don't think it's that bad and get annoyed when people **** on that while the Strikeforce tournament isn't that great, and their #1 prize pig got himself submitted then he got raped by Bigfoot Silva. I think there's two sides of the moon, if you will. There's some great heavyweights in the UFC and there's some great heavyweights in Strikeforce. There's also bad heavyweights in both. But Kongo has been really disappointing. I hope Carwin blasts him, a perfect match up.
I stopped reading here. The SF tourny is the BEST thing since the PRIDE OWGP's. Point blank point simple. To insinuate otherwise is stupid. As for the UFC heavyweight division for a FACT it IS poor in relation to the depth of talent in SF. Look at the UFC's top ten. It has Stefan Strude Cheick Kongo an irrelevant CC/Nog and Ben Rothwell in it. Apart from JDS Cain and may be Carwin all 3 of whom are still prospects and somewhat unproven they have no depth to speak of. Historically the UFC heavy division has always been bad. Now is no different.
I agree, except that 2010 was a great year for UFC HW's but it wasnt terrible. Just dont listen to it. The same people who blindly follow Strikeforce are the same people who use the term Zuffa Zombies. There's pros and cons with both orgs. I guess it just the instinct to back a 'team' like football, basketball or whatever and it just gets very childish at times. There's no need for it in combat sports, at least not with organisations. Of course you are gonna get that thing with certain fights (Shogun v Jones being a prime example recently) but that's what makes message boards tick I guess
I'm not, I'm just saying it's not so great that I would **** on the UFC heavyweight division because of it. It's obviously one of the best things Strikeforce have done, if not the best, but I don't think it's the be-all end all. No, it isn't, man. Strikeforce have experience, true. But Overeem hasn't any big wins, Rogers is just as inexperienced as Velasquez or JDS, Werdum I'll give you and they also have Fedor, Barnett and that dude who beat Arlovski (not really researched him, tbh), but UFC's isn't a **** sandwich either. Personally, I think they're about level, and maybe we'll see more of a agreement when we see the tournament come to it's end and see what happens with Cain, JDS and the future of the UFC heavyweight division. I agree with the heavyweight division not ever being that strong, but i think things are looking up. But saying that, it all depends on how you see JDS/Cain/Lesnar and how much respect you're willing to give the rest of the guys. Nelson, Mir and whatnot.
