Real fight begins with punches and ends on the ground. If we're comparing drunks to drunks than we shouldn't compare boxers to drunk but boxers to MMA fighters. MMA fighter would finish his fight standing also against a bunch of drunks. But unlike boxer if MMA fighter sees that the other guy can trade efficiently he has an option to take it to the ground and **** the boxer. It's that simple. It also means that if a stupid drunk **** was to fight a boxer and just happens to clinch with him(say instead of a sucker punch, or just starts **** close up in the face and grabs on) and they stumble to the ground, they're both have same skills and a no good scrappy drunk guy would be able to beat a boxers ass. Sad. Randy Couture, Gracies etc etc will all advice standing on the feet on a street. Except they all mention the fact of OTHERS helping out. Clearly Mui Thai would be the best to stay on the feet when facing several fighters. Is boxing effective street fighting combat? Yes, is it most effective . AGAIN the only reason Grapplers promote striking while on the street is because of factors such as 1 vs many and not because boxing is more "effective" as you seem to believe. They also promote STRIKING not boxing. So your petty lil' example doesn't fly. Tito Ortiz was in a street brawl, there was bunches of people in a dark ****ing alley goin at it. Tito's drunk ass was a dumbass to try and box a boxer. Hell I dunno if he knew who he was fighting. Same **** in MMA. If Tito was to try and box David Haye in MMA he would get his handed to him. It's simple. He boxed a boxer. This has nothing to do with boxing being a superior style to have in a street fight. Would have Tito taken him to the ground he would've pounded him out in seconds, why his DRUNK ass tried to box with a boxer? I dunno. I think it's the same thing with Congo trying to take Valesques down which is stupidity or it could be the alcohol. AGAIN Tito Ortiz example only proves that you can't box a boxer. This does not in ANY way show ANY type of superiority of boxing in a street fight WHAT SO EVER. Let's bring up your example of boxer or MMA fighter in a street brawl vs the bunches. First of all decent Mui Thai fighters will possess a LOT more striking options and A LOT more versatility to handle bunches of people in a street fight. IT IS LESS limited yet still very highly proficient striking, watch some "boxer vs kickboxer" videos. Ok, I'll give you even MORE slack, lets say that MMAer DOES choose to stand and BOX bunches of people. Do you not understand the fact that even though MMAers boxing is **** compared to that of a boxer it DOES NOT have to be that good? Someone who WATCHES boxing on regular bases will already have better start in a street fight. At LEAST 90% of the people don't know jack **** when it comes to putting their fists up. MMA fighter DOES possess decent striking which is light years ahead of anyone on the street. So even if MMA fighter does choose to stand and bang it out he CAN against a bunch of no bodies. I don't dismiss boxers ability. I love boxing and its complexity. What I dismiss is a retort that it's somehow the BEST way to fight in a street fight. That's ridiculous. Let's bring the topic of so called "amateur"(as far as record) Brock being the champion of MMA. Do you really think that if someone like Brock just comes out guns blazing for 2 rounds straight he won't be able to do **** in boxing? Please, just because of his sheer size, incredible athletic ability and explosiveness he'd be able to knock people out. He would punch THROUGH people's blocks. Do you realize one of the champions has barely any boxing ability? Valuev? And I even like the guy but let's face it, he's **** at boxing, he wins with his size. I bet you 100$ you're the first one in line to hate on Valuevs so called "boxing" when he wins. Brock would have plenty of success even if he won't ever make it anywhere to the top if he trained boxing as long as he did MMA(not gona mention wrestling). Than again, he doesn't have to, he uses about 10% of his full strength if he boxes, rest of his strength is on the ground. So lets sum this up shall we? You believe that MMA is just a sport and it does NOT resemble REAL FIGHTING. You also believe that MMA is least limited combat sport. If MMA is least limited sport than what is "unlimited", that would be a REAL FIGHT wouldn't it? Let's see: limitations are the rules placed in the combat sport, correct? In a real fight there are no rules which means its unlimited. So since you believe MMA is least limited it is only logical to assume that you also believe it is the closest to REAL FIGHT? You also believe that a MMA fighter would be a favorite in an MMA fight. Since MMA is the closest to a real fight how is it not THE skillSET to possess in a street fight? I know you're a logical person who will accept it. So how is boxing is THE skill to possess in a street fight again? You'll see the light soon. You already starting to have doubts. MMA is fun and requires a lot of skills and you'll soon start enjoying it to the fullest. Listen, I was like you when I first started hearin about MMA. I believe it was 2000 or 01'. Thank god I didn't watch TUF1 cause that **** would just make me give up on MMA. Being a fan of both is not a bad thing. Even someone like "Axe Man" who has fantasies about naked men on top of him when he's watching two fighters fight on the ground will eventually come in terms with his sexuality and learn that MMA is actually pretty complex and has many things that can be appreciated. You'll realize that it's different and what you see as "boxing" in MMA it's not. Not because it's pretty shitty to call boxing but because it MUST be modified to fit and it is no longer called boxing. You'll realize fact that their "terrible" squared up stance is actually GOOD because of low leg kicks and sprawling and its not a boxing stance. etc etc, im going to sleep.
Excellent post. I blame the Gracies for instilling this false sense of security that most fights end up on the ground. What they failed to mention is that all the fights theyve had are all within controlled environments and in some instance both parties have had time to prepare and condition themselves. I wrote an article about this a while ago, real fighting is out there in Iraq and Afghanistan. UFC and MMA are sports competition, it has nothing to do with real fighting or the true meaning of Martial arts. Youre not going to omoplata a flying beer bootle in a real fight, people need to get serious. Im not saying that Fedor would need to take you down to **** you up but I can guarantee you Fedor is smart enough not to pick fights in a bar As far a the boxer vs. MMA artist, you hit it right on the nose a boxer will always have that chance but the MMA guy will not. speaking of the Tito/Murray altercation, how bout the Zito/Van Damme? lol
Because he was a great wrestler which is a large part of mma of mma skill. But it's 0% of boxing so of course he couldn't win in boxing. Your comparison is completely idiotic and shows you know jack about any other combat sport aside from boxing. How old are you? Please tell me you are not a grown man making stupid threads like this.
Ever seen the Army Combatives program? Looks an awful lot like the first month at an MMA school. Same for Marine Martial Arts. The hand to hand combat for the military has ALWAYS been about MMA. When Jack Dempsey trained the military in hand to hand combat during WW2 guess what he did? Brought in the Judo, Wrestling, and Boxing trainers; Read Dempsey's book called "Fight Tough" it's a complete confirmation of the fact that training for hand to hand combat is much more similar to training for MMA than Boxing, period, end of discussion. How about Fernando Vargas getting choked unconscious in a parking lot in Oxnard by a blue belt?
Leon Spinks won the heavyweight boxing title in his 8th fight. He had amateur experience? So did Brock, that's what his 106–5 amateur wrestling record is the equivalent of. Anyway, this is a tired, old, boring argument. I am bigger fan of boxing, I know that you can win street fights with good boxing skills and I know that in many situations a lack of grappling, ground fighting and defense against a multitude of other techniques could lose you a fight.
