im truly embarresed by american support for boxing.... un ****ing believable. props to the UK.... they know a great sport when they have one.
It's a bull**** argument to be honest. How much would it cost for an American to travel from New York to Las Vegas for a fight? Compare that to how much it'd cost a Brit to travel from Carlisle to London. It's not as easy as saying "we sell more tickets for our fights than you do for yours". The mecca for world boxing is America. That seems to be slowly changing, but for now, it remains true.
No. But regardless, how much does it actually cost? Compared to what a fight fan in America would have to pay to travel cross country to watch his favourite fighter live?
no doubt but my point is that.... hatton and calz are clearly the uk's #1 fighter... that you cant argue... even tho mayweather is the us' #1 fighter people dont even look at it like that because our country is so diverse some may like de la hoya or pavlik, or cotto... theres not 1 clear cut representative because were so diveded..... americans will understand this point
The Best Athletes in the world come from the U.S. , the best boxers in history are from the U.S. , just because there has been a recent drought doesn't mean anything... If the best athletes in this country actually Boxed instead of playing Football (gridiron) , basketball or baseball then we would absolutely dominate the sport still.... people have just lost interest in Boxing, alot of young people love MMA now, and its not like we have boxing in schools or anything. But all this crap is stupid anyway, who cares about all this nationalism ****, just watch the sport and just because some great boxer was born in the same country as yourself doesn't make you anymore special than someone from a country that never has had a great boxer.
Add that to a hotel room or B&B. Then the tickets for the fight itself. It does add up. As has already been said, you can't call Britain the Mecca of boxing due to having bigger attendances. You could only call it that, if the best fights were continually staged there.
mec·ca Audio Help (měk'ə Pronunciation Key n. 1. 1. A place that is regarded as the center of an activity or interest. uk doesnt fit that description to me... not many fighters travel to the uk looking for boxing stardom
Maybe you could say the UK is the mecca for Ricky Hatton fights right ? Looking at the definition though, UK is definitely not the Mecca for boxing
thats what im saying... when using the word mecca as a sports reference its usually where the best of participants of that sport or biggest events happen at... thats why the uk couldnt really ever fit the description as the mecca
Dont let Brits fool you - boxing is a poor poor cousin to football (soccer), rugby union, rubgy league, cricket, golf, Formula 1 and even horse racing in terms of media coverage and attenances. Usually a boxing story will be on the last of the sports pages just after the listing for the greyhound racing. Hatton attendances is a freak for an English boxer in terms of popularity - other English boxers dont get near the level of support.
