Excuse me, I would like some acknowledgement for winning the thread please In all seriousness, I don't think this can be beaten because it has both quality at the top end and quantity with the contenders. Actually it can be equalled, but Angott is my pick for #1 (only yesterday it was Moore, so upon further investigation I might choose someone else). I think the series with a prime Ray Robinson, who was bigger than Angott, is the clincher. It's worth even more than Archie Moore fighting Ezzard Charles. It's more like Bob Foster facing Muhammad Ali three times.
Well there was no Ring rankings for a swathe of Greb's career, and nor were they anything like perfected. Greb certainly has far superior top line competition and his second tier comprises of some of the best from three divisions. I wouldn't go pinning the medal on your chest quite yet. I like Greb better. And I haven't looked at Langford yet, but he'll have more in the way of top line, too.
Yeah, definitely. I've done quite a few of those comprehensive lists over the last few years. I think I did Jose Napoles, Emile Griffith and Kid Gavilan once in a thread to compare the three. No skill involved, just need to look through some **** very carefully.
What do you mean by top line? I don't think Greb faced anyone who can match Angott's series with Robinson.
I mean that Greb has advantages in terms of top heavy. When writing out your list you implied tiers by putting a space in between three different section. Greb's list would be very top heavy. Agnott has a better pound for pound opponent in Robinson, but it's debateable as to whether or not he had a tougher test than fighting a bigger Gene Tunney. As Janitor pointed out the other day, it may be that no other 160lb fighter in history could have extended light-heavyweight and then heavyweight Tunney so completely.
I'd say Tunney matched Ike Williams... But Ray Robinson is a bit of a different story. So Angott has the ultimate series at the top, the bit just below that would belong to Greb. But then depth might belong with Angott. I don't ****ing know. Either way, Angott might actually overtake McLarnin as the fighter who crammed in the best opponents in his career. Back later.
Ok, since some of these names have been put forward for other resumes, Levinsky also fought : Mike McTigue Carl Morris x2 fireman Jim Flynn x3 Charley Weinert x3 Homer Smith Chuck Wiggins Jack Renault Jim Coffey x7 Leo Houck x5 He fought tough Bartley Madden multiple times, the amateur star Bob McAllister more than once, and others who are possibly worthy of mention. Added to the original list I put forth ............. (Jack Dempsey Gene Tunney Harry Greb x 6 Jack Dillon x 10 Gunboat Smith x 6 Billy Miske x 4 Tommy Gibbons Georges Carpentier Young Stribling Jeff Clark Ed McGoorty x 3 Jack (Twin) Sullivan x 2 Bill Brennan x 4) ........... I think it rivals anyone.
Time for Holman Williams to chime in: Archie Moore X2 Charley Burley X7 Jake LaMotta Lloyd Marshall X3 Marcel Cerdan Eddie Booker X3 Jose Basora X7 Cocoa Kid X13 Bert Lytell X4 Jack Chase X2 Aaron Wade X2 Kid Tunero X4 Henry Hall X2 Joe Carter X3 Steve Belloise Jimmy Leto Bob Satterfield Johnny Green Chuck Woods Antonio Fernandez X2 Jackie Burke Jack Portney Joe Legon Izzy Jannazzo X3 Lew Massey Young Gene Buffalo X5 Sam Baroudi Carl Dell Eddie Dolan X2 Frankie Britt X2 Wildcat Henry
Lloyd Marshall, anyone? Ezzard Charles X3 Archie Moore X2 Charley Burley Holman Williams X3 Jake LaMotta Jimmy Bivins Eddie Booker Freddie Mills Ken Overlin Bobo Olson Shorty Hogue X2 Jack Chase X3 Joe Carter X2 Joey Maxim Lou Brouillard Teddy Yarosz X2 Ceferino Garcia X2 Harry Matthews Irish Bob Murphy Oakland Billy Smith Ralph DeJohn Anton Christoforidis Johnny Romero X3 Joe Kahut Nate Bolden X2 Fitzie Fitzpatrick Johnny Rossi Joe Reddick Don Cockell X2 Wildcat Henry
How so? Greb was finished fighting at 32 years old. Archie fought all the way through 46 years old. Archie fought 3 decades worth of contenders/champions while greb only one one decades worth.
