Under 185lb Tournament, Round 2: # 3 Ezzard Charles vs # 14 Roy Jones

Roy continues to be overrated at Lt. Heavyweight.

 

Charles is the perfect blend of talent and technical mastery. Jones will lose a decision.

 

Marshall was no Roy Jones for speed, nowhere even close. Any footage I've seen of Charles he's not exactly a speedster, neither in footwork nor in handspeed.

 

Jones by a **** hair and I will probably change my mind tomorrow. Really tough match for so early on with 2 of probably the best 6 fighters at this weight in question.

 

Marshall was fast and Charles did not exactly look slow against him.

He may not have been a Roy Jones but there is a point when a deficit in skill and experience in comparison to your opponent will cancel out the speed advantage. This fight could be that fight.

 

Well, I'll just say that if this many people are favouring Jones over Charles (Senya aside, as I'm aware of his views), I hope they're not among the group that rates Charles in their top 5 pound for pound.

 

Marshall was considered one of the fastest fighters of all time? By whom?
Deficit in skill and experience? Gimme a break. Charles was far from perfect fighter, I could point out lots and lots of mistakes he is making in his fights that are on film, or where he could have improved his technical or tactical skills.

 

Could point those out in Jones, too. Namely when two turtle slow fighters that were waaay slower exploited those deficiencies and put him to sleep.

Jones speed carries him late, but eventually he throws something Charles doesn't mind eating and gets countered. Charles by KO.

 

Charles' chin wasn't that solid either. I could as easily see an opposite result, Charles losing by KO. And it is more probable, because due to speed difference and Charles' defense being far from perfect, Jones will be connecting much more often than vica versa.
