    Meehans style was obviously eccentric.

The best description I can muster is that he was a sort of dancer swarmer. I would venture that there must be a couple of dimensions to it that we are not seeing. Don't see enough in the sescriptions to compare him to Conn.

Meehan turned down offers to fight Dempsey over any duration greater than four rounds, from which I can only conclude that he saw such a fight as being disadvantageous.

I don't want to beat Meehan to death here, not least for the reasons you mention, but also because there are other fighters, inferior and also smaller, who were able to survive early with Dempsey.

Meehan would have been beaten over a longer distance at a guess, but then Conn is proven as nullifying a world class offense over 12, not 4. He's also very obviously vastly superior.

I think that the only salient analogue here is Gibbons.

Mc ,Sorry I'm late, but I agree with you ! You are a criminal. first time we agreed on anything. !
But you have showed penance by acknowledging that the prime tigerish Dempsey would be too fast for a Marciano and Foreman, thus saving you
from being put in the slammer .Therefore, fate has been kind to you...
P.S. Warden Burt thinks that Dempsey [1919-1923] would be the worst opponent for one of my idols Billy Conn, as Dempsey with his cat-like quickness would be in Conn's face, and would hurt him much quicker than the slower more methodical Joe Louis. Jack too strong and powerful for Billy to avoid for too long...:happy

    I think Dempsey wins.

Billy Conn was a top-notch fighter, and one of my all-time favourites. So I'll give him due credit, he could well make this a very tough fight.

In truth, the Louis-Conn fight was quite close over the first 12 rounds. Louis was catching Conn quite a bit - a testament to Conn's durability, and contrary to the idea that Louis was being schooled.

I think most people would admit that Dempsey was faster on his feet moving forward than Louis was. I think this would benefit him in getting to nail Conn more often than Louis did.
On the other hand, Conn was tough and could box on the inside and outside and could trouble Dempsey for sure.
But sooner or later Dempsey's superior firepower would prevail.
Conn liked to brawl, and liked to fight rough ... if Louis could tempt him into making mistakes, Dempsey would too - if it comes to that.

A prime Dempsey could possibly catch up with Conn and finish him within 6 rounds. OR it could go longer, to a decision even.

Indeed. Dempsey has to come out ferocious with all guns blazing and try to take Conn´s head of. I don´t see him winning that fight ove the distance or with a knockout past the 4-6th round. But I think that´s what he would do and at his very best this would be too much for Conn.
