Okay, I saw the guy's record in Strefa. He did indeed win the African heavyweight championship as an amateur in 1974.
I question if the Island fights were even legitimate professional bouts. Possibly the fights may never have taken place. I'm sure you know about the Flash Gordon scam in the mid-'70s, in which he created a fictitious heavyweight named "Bagel Boy," and kept sending Ring Magazine false accounts of the phantom boxer's wins. Ring Magazine recorded all the fake wins in their record book, and even elevated "Bagel Boy" to their number ten U.S. slot at one point.
Kenmore, ABC-TV showed highlights of that fight before the Larry Holmes vs Alfredo Evangilsta WBC Championship fight. It was part of the Evangilista highlights. It showed about 20-seconds of that fight (end of the 7th round) when Alfredo floored Tchanthiung. Jacob was not 6' 1" as box/rec states, he was much taller. ABC-TV had the fight on film, in its entirety. I'll see if I can locate it on Spain Television. I'm sure many of those Island fights in the French Caribbean were nothing more than 4-Round Smokers, with Jacob fighting 'clowns and strongman' from carnival acts.
I saw the broacast of the Holmes-Evangelista fight. I don't remember seeing any footage of Evangelista being floored by Chuing. That would have been unforgetable: it would have undermined Evangelista's crediblity in a way that ABC-TV could not afford to let happen. I'm not saying Chuing didn't floor him; I believe you. However I don't remember seeing that on the broadcoast or reading about it in the magazines. 27-0 (25 KO's) and a number nine ranking by the WBC, for Chuing, elude my recollection altogether. I just can't believe it's true. In order for a bum to get a ranking like that, he would have to have been backed by one of the major promoters, just so the WBC could get their pay-off money. Chuing could not have had a big promoter. Evangelista, of course, had Don King behind him at the time. As for African heavyweights in the late '70s, aside from the usual white guys in South Africa, there were virtually no others. I remember Ngozika Ekwellum, a heavily muscled Nigerian who was ranked in the British Commonwealth top ten. But Ekwellum wasn't even close to world class. As for Chuing, I just remember nothing of the guy. Never saw his name anywhere.
Was'nt marvis frazier a non title bout? Also, this guy who fought evangilista just had to be backed by don king. Who else could think of a name that sounded like a cash register opening (cha ching)
The only portion of the Evangilista vs Tchanthiung fight that was shown was the last 20-seconds of the 7th Round, where Evangilista floors him in the corner. Remember, nobody knew who Alfredo Evangilista was before he fought Muhammad Ali. Tchanthiung was only in-line for a title bout, if he beat a ranked fighter. Who knew what guys he beat,,,,most likely some French Boxing manager had $$$ involved, and kept him in the French Caribbean to 'fluff' him up. 1978 fights by Jacob Tchanthiung; 8/11/78,,,L KO 8 vs. #6 Alfredo Evangilista (21-2-1) (13 KO's),,,,in Lepe, Andalucia, Spain 5/19/78,,W KO 1 vs. -- Roger Russell (12-17-2) (4 KO's),,,Essen, Germany 3/31/78,,W KO 4 vs. -- Maurice Repant (4-5-0) (O KO's),,,Paris, France 2/17/78,,W KO 2 vs. -- Ben Jeudy (9-1-1) (4 KO's),,,St. Martin..........* French Caribbean Heavyweight Championship 1/20/78,,W KO 3 vs. -- Virgil Gibson (3-3-0) (3 KO's),,St. Martin 1/6/78,,,W KO 5 vs. -- Clinton Parsons (7-10-1-) (4 KO's),,St. Martin 1977 fights in St. Martin by Jacob Tchanthiung; KO 2 vs. Okacha Boubeker KO 2 vs. Coulilay Demba KO 3 vs. Lisimo Obutobe KO 2 vs. Aaron Solomon KO 1 vs. Jean Belval KO 1 vs. Simon Pore KO 2 vs. Phillip Capitan W Dec 8 vs. Clement Greenbridge KO 3 vs. Phillip Capitan KO 1 vs. Clinton Baker W Dec 6 vs. Godfrey Oliver KO 2 vs. Roy Morris KO 3 vs. Rafael Guerrero KO 2 vs. Phillip Capitan KO 1 vs. Trevor Harris KO 2 vs. Selwyn Lake KO 1 vs. Reginald Peters KO 4 vs. Edward Baptiste KO 1 vs. Joseph Coke 1976 fights in St. Martin by Jacob Tchanthiung; KO 2 vs. Vernon Harris KO 1 vs. Selwyn Lake KO 2 vs. James Inniss
Where did you find Chuing's record? I really want to know where this came from. The only name I recognize on his pre-1978 record is Rafael Guerrero.
Kenmore, Posted records of these fighters when they fought Jacob Tchanthiung; \ * Clinton Parsons (7-10-1) was from the Bahama's. * Coulilay Demba (4-5-1) was from Mali. * Lisimo Obutobe (7-4-0) was from Congo, but lived in Luxembourg. * Aaron Solomon (6-5-0) was from Houston, Texas. * Jean Belval (4-13-2) was from France. * Simon Dore (1-2-0) was from France. * Clement Greenbridge (4-6-2) was from Trinidad & Tobago. * Godfrey Oliver (6-9-0) was from Trinidad & Tobagao. * Roy Morris (5-2-0) was from Florida. Also fought Ossie Ocasio on 6/14/77. * Selwyn Lake (1-0-0) and (1-1-0) was from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Greg Page vs Gerrie Coetzee,,,,, He only got the fight, because he was willing to go to South Africa. What about the Riddick Bowe 'travelling circus of clowns'.
I do believe Holyfield's torn glove may have been intentionally prepared , just like his headbutts and steroids (in which I blame no one because almost everyone use them) and probably a few more . Something similar happened with Moorer , when they retaped / relaced Moorer's glove 2 buy him extra time 2 recover .
Marvis Frazier had 'no business' in the ring with Larry Holmes. Even if it was a non-title 10-round bout. Ossie Ocasio,,,,,,borderline. He only got it because Stan Ward lost to Randy Stephens.
I know your a fan of Holmes, so whats your take on him having a non-title fight. Also, cant believe that halfwit Audley Harrison hasnt got a mention yet
