Is it crazy to say Usyk would win? He has the mobility which gave Louis fits and next to Louis he wold be the bigger man. Plus he's a Southpaw who probably takes a better punch than the guys who gave Louis fits. Thoughts.
It is interesting to mull over, and you could make an argument either way...but of course saying that guarantees attracting the wrath of both modernists and nostalgists like a lightning rod. (with both camps insisting there's ZERO chance their guy loses)
It is a lighting rod of a fight, that's for sure. Usyk could expose Louis lack of footwork and average defense.
I love Louis but Usyk is all wrong for him. Louis once announced that he would never fight a southpaw, and now he is going to beat the best southpaw heavy ever? https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/joe-louis-on-fighting-southpaws.480845/ Louis will always be the guy with 25 defenses of the undisputed title, and an American hero, but...
Usyk takes him apart. Louis would be utterly lost what to do and starts taking an almighty schellacking from the mid rounds onwards, once Usyk's found his rhythm. Likely takes a big left cross and drops for the count. I say that with quite a heavy heart, as Louis was and forever will be the epitome of a World Heavyweight Champion. But what one thinks about a fighter's historical standing shouldn't have any bearing on a H2H contest.
Wasnt Joe that man who lost to Schmeling? Was he not dropped by Galento? Didnt he get knocked out by Rocky Marciano? Didnt he have a size advantage over 90 percent of his opponents?
Man, the Bomber getting bombed out. I am a huge Usyk fan and argued for Usyk, but part of me hopes a few Louis fans will get in here and set me straight.
I fancy Usyk in this one for the reason of his mobility and elusiveness. Louis didn't particularly like the boxer types.
Usyk but I would never bet against a prime Joe Louis. Different eras, not a good comparison. I’d like to see any modern fighter fight as frequently as guys in Joe’s era. In those days if you were hurt in training camp, you still fought. If you were recovering from your last fight, you still fought. Those guys were hard as nails. People who compare modern fighters who have the best nutrition, ample training time, rest and modern fitness training to guys from the era where they fought all the time and the good guys usually fought other good guys rarely take this into consideration. Joe Louis was a true American hero. Usyk is my favorite modern fighter but I’ll never disrespect Louis. No modern fighter will ever be as great as Joe Louis (IMO), even guys who might beat him head to head.
Im too lazy to check but Joe won the rematch against Schmelling. He was an old man, shot, when he fought Marciano in his last professional fight, his 69th. Marciano knew it and supposedly wept after the fight because he knew he beat an old man. Louis had a lot of miles on the odometer when they fought. Young Louis would have been a different story. He finished with a 66-3 record and had 25 straight title defenses an all time record. Fury has one. Louis and Schmelling became life long friends. Schmelling served as a pallbearer for Joe’s funeral and helped pay for his burial. Joe was buried in Arlington with full military honors.
I think Usyk would win,but it wouldn't be an easy win at all, probably 70% that Usyk would win and 30% that Louis would,Louis landing one big punch could change the course of whole fight,as he hits harder than AJ,but Usyk is master at dodging so it would be hard for Louis to land something on a southpaw as crafty as Usyk,it would be a great fight
Joe would look terrible against a Grade A mover like Usyk, he’s make a great fighter look ponderous and slow
