"El Alacrán", de 26 años, iba a enfrentarse a su compatriota Cristian Mijares, pero este ha decidido no pelear al considerar baja la bolsa que iba a recibir (translation, more or less accurate) "the scorpion" (el alacrán), 26 yo, was about to face his countryman Cristian mijares, but finally mijares decided not to fight because of the small purse he was going to get. That's the last news I got. And that he is thinking about fighting one of these three fighters "Jon Fernández (14-0, 12 KO) Guillaume Frenois (45-1, 11 KO) José Matías Romero (17-0, 7 KO)".
I mean, that's fair tbh. Some may scoff at Mijares turning it down, especially when a title shot was in his own words the whole avowed original point of his comeback - and yet when you consider the age gap and how dangerous the Scorpion is, putting yourself in Mijares' shoes you would not want to go into that situation (which maybe he could have put on a clinic and sprung the upset, but at very long-shot odds - and with a much higher likelihood of getting badly hurt and seeing all your precious momentum built up over the last few years brought to a halt, maybe putting the lid on his career) without ample compensation. Do we know what the figures offered were, and whether Berchelt's team offered a less insulting one to mitigate before shrugging and moving on?
I honestly dont know anymore. I just know that, that he refused to fight because he considered the purse to be way too small. And now berchelt is looking for oponent (specially those three fighters I said). I know nothing else. I dont blame mijares, I would only fight berchelt for a freaking good amount of money. He can put a hell of a beating in anyone. (That's why I expect jonfer not to accept this fight, since I dont consider him to be ready for berchelt, and he's still very young). Either I get good money or I dont fight berchelt, hence, I cant ask mijares for doing otherwise. (I'm not going to fight berchlet ever, obviously, I mean if I were a pro fighter) El alacrán is a hell of a nickname, btw. I just realized it
Hopkins also seemingly destroyed the career of that young undefeated guy he KO'd at middleweight. Dude never fought again after that.
Joe Lipsey? Was he that highly regarded? His only step up before he fought B-Hop was Derrick James (best known today as Errol Spence's coach, was a fairly pedestrian fighter)
...can I get an "amen" on Željko Mavrović? The guy was 29 (barely more than a wee infant by heavyweight standards), with five years of seasoning, just entering his prime when he took his big step up against Lewis. In that one fight (which drained every little tinder of fire in his soul), he showed a lot. Enough that even after two decades knowledgeable boxing people are left scratching their heads and wondering if maybe they witnessed a third-trimester abortion that night, of what could have been a Great career (yes, capital g) had it been allowed to reach term.
I was conflicted by it, I was kind of rooting for him to succeed, he was fighting out of Miami, and I didn't mind him all that much, but I quasi wrote him off after his match against Toliver, I knew he wouldn't be a legit player, that being said, I thought he probably eke by Freitas. I thought Light Middle was a bridge too far, guess not.
I don't recall off hand, just know the kid had all KO's against damn near all bums. I'd actually have to do some digging. I know Hopkins acted like Lipsey was touted to dethrone him in one of his long winded dialogues. Lipsey just came to mind, because he never fought again after getting whooped by Hopkins.
