Klitschko wins both. Galento would never reach him and Max would eat jabs until the right hand finishes him. Baer had the power but was too one dimensional.
I don't see it happening. Bear swung with wild shots, leaving himself open on far too many occasions. Also, while having great power, I think Vitali's chin and boxing ability would keep him out of harm's way.
galento should be in the HOF for his trash talk of louis alone but he gets destroyed in this one baer, when he was on and took the fight game seriously (which was rare) was possibly the greatest single puncher in heavyweight history and had an underrated, varied offense. he knew how to put his punches together and had decent enough movement to set them up. at the end though i see vitali taking this. baer would hurt vitali early but wouldn't finish him off and would get discouraged by the 4th. vitali would use his height, reach and awkwardness to avoid the big punches from that point on, picking his spots and drilling max with long jabs and rights. the occasional lead left hook would surprise and stun max who did not quite have the chin of vitali. he's cut badly by the 8th and the ref stops it mid way through the 9th
that's one of the only times i've seen baer take a fight seriously. THAT baer had a right hand cannon that could compete with almost any other in heavyweight history. the problem was he was a clown who hated training and hated hitting people even more. but the baer that came to fight was a danger to anyone in history, even louis or ali
Destroys both. No contest. Baer looks horrible on film, wide open and not terribly fast because of his looping punches. If he had ever learned to box a bit, maybe a different outcome. BUt Vitali has a granite chin and great sense of distance. Galento would not find a way inside. Both would be ring travesties.
Gallento would get prety roughly handeled but he would be prety much the best fighter that Vitally Klitscko had actualy beaten in the ring as oposed to in a fantasy match up. Max Baer would win if he took the fight seriously (always a big if).
this is where i'm struggling; i just can't see a consistently serious, determined baer. even if he did though, i think vitali's size and awkwardness would cause him fits.
I would pick Vitali Klitschko in both these fights. If the Schmeling fight is Max's best example of serious fighting, I cant say I rate Baer as much more than a crude puncher. He used a crouch and cross-arm defense at times but just as ready to stand up and hold his chin out, wide open. Really, I have trouble understanding how Max schmeling can beat Joe Louis but lose to Max Baer ! having said that, I rate Baer as one of the great punchers, and his chin was granite (it needed to be!), and he was fitter and tougher than given credit for. I guess at heavyweight that's all you need sometimes.
