anything with too good a story to it is overrated because people fall in love with the story and defend it. we are all guilty of it.
I'll make this short and sweet. Everything surrounding the Ali-Foreman bout was fraught with controversy. I'm not saying Ali may not have still beat him straight up but there was this and that i.e. George's postponement, high temps in Zaire, the most loose ropes I've ever seen in a fight, plus Ali not entertaining ANY possibility of a rematch, etc... Foreman's "best" was not Ali/Young. Muhammad, mentally, fried his brain in Zaire and post-Zaire successes by George were simply based on his physical 'monsterness', not the complete, pre-Ali, package. As to your Ossie O comment? That has to be one of the most inane statements I've EVER read on this website....
:thumbsup but I agree with his Ossie O comment , and you can find yet even more humiliating loss/es earlier on Jimmy Young's record :yep. Know that there were very high temps in San Juan when Young beat Foreman . But Young's win over Foreman still has more credibility to it than Ali's because the ropes were fine and he didn't hold him behind the head. Just more than Ali's .
An autopsy confirmed that Max Baer killed Frankie Campbell with his fists alone, not because the back of Cambell's head hit the ring ropes, bounced off the canvas, or against the corner post. The one time he really got his dander up on film, he used a left hook to quickly put out a man who had previously gone ten and 20 round distances with him. He was rated the hardest puncher by the three men on the receiving end of the hardest punches Louis ever delivered. (This refers to Schmeling, Braddock and Uzcudun.) The Bomber himself indicated Maxie was the hardest puncher he ever fought. While Hatchetman Sheppard said Moore was the hardest puncher he ever competed against, he left no doubt that the Larruper surpassed everybody in a sparring context, Moore, Walcott and Louis included. Max Baer's power is not overrated, his unwillingness to use it after Campbell is underrated.
Boxing history is rich with examples of stories that become "established opinion" simply because the story is so good. Primo carnera as almost a hoax champ - the idea that it would be possible to be a champion without winning any genuine fights is such a big story people want to believe it. There are lots of others. maybe I myself get carried away with Tokyo Douglas, many others get carried away with big cat Williams, Tim witherspoon and Riddick bowe. like I say we are all guilty.
What a nonsense post. Actually pretty funny in it's combination of half truths and complete fabrications ...
No I rank him about where you do. He definately would destroy guys like Spinks (both of them imo),Seldon,Botha and probably Bruno all of whom held Heavyweight titles but when I hear about him walking through Frazier,Louis,Walcott etc I think he gets overrated.
Really one of the worst posts I've seen,,, te=frankenfrank;10053920]Ali , his speed and his resume Louis , his power and technique Roid Jones Jr. and his speed Floyd Mayweather Jr. Jack Johnson Archie Moore : he was very good , but far from all time top 20 P4P , he is a borderline top 10 @ 175 . Harry Greb Jack Dempsey Bob Fitzsimmons Sonny Liston and his power Cleveland Williams Larry Holmes Ezzard Charles (I always thought he was very good and better than Moore , higher than him both p4p &@175 , but the recent thread of Charles vs. Toney and Hopkins proved to me that he is indeed vastly overrated by others) Gene Tunney most of the known pre 1980s fighters really[/quote]

Also your insite on George's decline after Ali was spot on. For the Young bout Gil Clancey tried to shorten George's hooks by bringing his feet closer together but instead it just messed up his natural balance. His jab no longer had his body weight behind it and when he tried to let loose it looked like he would fall over. Not even close to his best.
