    Maybe he truly was a great fighter..the line dividing "very good" from "great" is very thin...I believe that he became a better, more confident fighter after the 1st loss to Ali...his back problem was, to me..legit..Floyd was a painfully honest man, and he obviously had a back problem during that fight, as evidenced by his corner man lifting him and flexing his back muscles backwards between rounds. Patterson seemed to fight every fight there afterwards with a grim determination to vindicate himself, and I think he succeeded.

    gr8 fighter would've loved to see him work over the other guys who went to heavy like conn, tunney, charles etc.

    I dunno why you didn't mention him, either.
    Patterson thought Rademacher was more deserving of a title fight than Machen, Folley and Pastrano were, even though they were the top contenders. As a matter of fact he skipped all 10 top contenders and picked Rademacher. The guy sounds pretty impressive.

    Why was that?

    Love this post and agree that i'm surprised its this close. People act.like the argument about Pattersons greatness ends with his title reign. In reality that's just the beginning.

    Yeah, seven years later.
    He might have been able to finally beat Ali if he had booked a fight in 1990. Although I wouldn't bet on it.

    So true. Thank God Patterson hadn't been in. any damaging fights and was 7 years younger.

    True...if anything, Patterson became a better fighter after his reign as champ was over.

    The Rademacher fight was a complete travesty. It is a blight on the heavyweight championship, a blight on Patterson and a blight on boxing.
