I still think that film was the peak of Stallone's acting career. Other films may have made more money, but the characters he played were cardboard. Rocky Balboa (in 1, anyway) was a real person, a dumbo that had never made it and had his one chance to prove that he was something. Touched a chord with me. The other films didn't have that magic imho.
I thought he was perfect If you had some established guy doing the role it would just have been "Oh, Burt's doing a boxer in this one."
Hes fine for the sequels. They're action flicks. But the first is a genuinely great drama. And hes a poor actor.
Dude, WTF are you on about? He was nominated for Best Actor as his portrayal of Rocky in the original film.
He was perfect in that role. I can think of tons of actors I think are far more talented than Sly, but this was actually an example of quality casting.
I thought that was the best acting performance he'd ever put on, tbh. I'm genuinely surprised that you think he sucked. But I agree he sucks nuts in general as an actor.
So what? Award ceremonies like that are just a bunch of old dudes saying what is and what isn't good.
Stallone was perfect for the role. He was playing himself. But, seriously, it would have been a very tough role to play. Mark Wahlberg would have done a good job.
According to this interview with Sly he re-wrote it over and over again, Rocky was originally going to be quite a dark character, but his wife didn't like it. This is a great interview actually, and watching it you realise he deserves all the success he has had: This content is protected And to the person who thinks it was bad casting to have Sly in it. I couldn't disagree more! Everything in the film just works, yes it is a bit rough around the edges, but that is part of the charm, the chemistry is spot on, and it is one of the most widely loved sports films of all time, critically acclaimed too, winning best picture at the academy awards (and winning 3 oscars in total plus countless other awards). You start messing around with the casting, you could easily mess up the whole chemistry of the film. It is almost like saying "Leonardo da Vinci should have found a prettier model when he was doing the Mona Lisa". There are some things you just don't mess around with!
