the Yanqui Diaz debacle was like 4 or 5 years ago. JCG has beaten ol Ollie 2x and dispatched Virchis (who many thought was a threat due to size and power). What has povetkin or anyone else done to merit a shot?

Right, Gomez beating McCall was a slight accomplishment, but his beating the decently legit Vichis certainly makes him as deserving as anyone else, in my opinion.

But as has been said, I am not sure Vitali will fight anyone but a unification fight with *Nick Value*, or the mythical Lewis fight (which ain't happenin).

But you never know, I doubt he launched such a successful, and unprecedented comeback to bow out, again, merely cause he has to face a no name mandatory before a bigger fight with someone like possibly Valuev.

I think we'll see Vitali do what he has to do and fight Gomez, in hopes of getting Valuev in the ring down the road. AFterall, I think Sdunek said Vitali had two or three more fights.

That was Wlad, that was 1993 and Wlad was 17 years old. Almost worth as much as Maskaevs win over Vitali in 1990.

Anyway Vitali has to fight Gomez else he will be stripped and that's it for holding all belts in the Klitschko family. He should fight Gomez, it is a reasonably match to stay busy while waiting for bigger things. Gomez is no threat but is still a decent name to have on your record.

can't believe jcg is being treated so lightly here: "no name" "stay busy while waiting for bigger things"..... jcg's a bigger test than that bohemoth bum valuev and is at least as big a threat to either klit as any other hw out there

If I am JCG I would keep my mouth shut because the more he talks **** the more of a beating he will receive. Vitali is a mean dude and it is not wise to make him even angrier before fighting him.

What difference does it make when it was? He was knocked out by a nobody. Vitali would kill this fat clown easily.

that **** can happen sometimes to any hw (see wlad vs corrie tho corrie is head and shoulders above yanqui; or see barrett vs couser) and it matters because obviously jcg wasn't at his best that night as evidenced by his recent performances i noted in my first post. and the bottom line is that there aren't many if any more deserving hw's out there (tho i agree vitaly should beat jcg).

I somewhat agree in that Gomez is just as tough a fight as anyone else out there. Probably a harder test for VK than Peter was.

But I think VK would get Gomez outta there late. But he's every bit as good as the rest of VK's potential opponents. Agree. Good boxer with a long reach.

Gomez came directly from the bar to fight Yanqui, he was pathetically overconfident and paid the price.

We have seen that Vitaly has the inside tracks at the WBC, but if he can't get a fight done with Valuev soon (50days), he will be forced to fight Gomez to keep his belt, maybe he will find a way to slip his title to Wlad, who would fight Gomez then.

Valuev has a belt, Vitali has a belt, Gomez ain't got **** but a bogus mandatory payoff.

I'd much rather see Vitali vs. Valuev then Vitali vs. Gomez just for the unification implications.

One thing I do remember about Gomez, was that a few years ago when asked who the best HW in the world was, he didn't say himself, but said Wladimir Klitschko was, by a long distance.

I hope Vitali goes ahead and takes the Gomez fight, and then looks to get a Valuev fight sometime next year.

Cause as it stands, now, Valuev will avoid Vitali ( out of fear of losing his title ) and Valuev will fight either Golota, or Holyfield in December.

So Vitali's offer to Valuev is not happening, at least for now. Let's hope Vitali stays at it and fights Gomez in order to keep his title while hoping to get a unification fight with Valuev in 2009. But with King seeing his last title being defended by an underdog in Valuev against a #$@#@#@ Klitscko brother, I am not holding my breath, even for 2009, unless they can lure King into making a deal with huge money. And I would think Vitali Valuev in a unification fight would bring huge money in Europe.

    Go, Vitali!
