    "Big difference between losses"

Yes, and you mentioned one. You didn't mention that Walcott went further against Marciano than Vitali has with anyone.

Against his two top opponents, Walcott went 15 against Louis in their first fight, and went into the 13th against Marciano.

Who knows how well Vitali would endure if he had to fight Walcott's championship rounds.

Against his two top opponents (and I would say ONLY really top opponents) Vitali lasted 9 against Byrd and 6 against Lewis before he tossed in the towel.

    "Vitali was ahead on rounds"

I don't judge a horse on the backstretch. I judge a horse at the finish line.

"Neither 'Young or Byrd' are in the same class"

I agree. Byrd beat Vitali and a generally better level of opposition than Vitali fought. I rate Byrd higher.

Foolishly punching air until exhausted, foolishly punching air until injured.

Young can make vitali miss in the pocket. He won't make him pay but he'll outland him 2-1.

Fair enough. Young might beat Vitali off Vitali's dreary performance against Byrd.

I still like both Walcott and Byrd above Young, though. I think Walcott has much more offensive kick than the other two.

It is interesting how many have focused on Walcott's alleged weak chin.

Walcott was stopped 6 times in 71 fights.

Byrd was stopped 4 times in 47 fights.

That means that Walcott was actually statistically slightly harder to stop than Byrd.

Both men fought a great number of dangerous punchers.

The last 5 years were the best of jersey's career. I only hold losses in that time frame against him.

Byrd was blasted out by ike when he got too cute and didn't lose by stoppage again until past his prime and fatigued against wlad.

Jersey has the tools, I just don't think he has the style to stay in the pocket, move his head and push forward with combo's whilst slipping every punch from vitali.

C'mon, V.K. is always in good to great shape.... As of late, (Adamek & Chisora) he has been in awesome shape... 40+ yrs of age, too... V.K. has gone 12 rds before with ease... I trust he can go 15 if need be.....The man is a doctor and athlete...

"The man is a doctor and athlete"

    Walcott was not an athlete?

What has having a doctorate have to do with anything?

"I trust he can go 15 if need be"

He didn't even last 10 with either of the two best fighters he fought.

Laugh all you want, but what victim of Vitali's is as good as Holyfield or Tua?

And you can laugh for the rest of your life, but it won't reverse that Vitali lost to Byrd.

Sorry, but if you like realism, I'll give you some. There is no there there with Vitali. You can't be the best in a competitive sport without beating the best and Vitali didn't beat the best.

Walcott was very skilled.......I don“t think would be easy for Vitali. But actually I agree with Bill here.

    I thought I was debating a man.

    My mistake.

I thought I was debating someone with the background and competence to debate these issues.

You are, Eddie... However, your insistance that the cagey yet small Walcott would take the hulking and very well trained V.K. to school and either get a TKO or a decision win... I simply do NOT see this happening at all... In my view, since V.K. is a current champion in a so-so era of heavyweight boxing, he oftens gets shorted in the respect dept... I'm willing to look passed all the manure and give V.K. his props as he is still active...
    :deal

I also admire Jersey Joe Walcott, but his size and boxing style would NOT benefit him if he were pitted against the post 1960 big boys who were also very skilled and powerful...

Jersey Joe Walcott became champ during a bland heavyweight era of the early 1950s...
