After beating Mercer, Lewis rematched McCall for the vacant WBC title defeating him, he then had to defend it against their challengers.

 

But he did avoid the Mercer rematch, Mercer begged for it and Lewis flat out avoided him.

And for the record Lewis struggled with Mercer more than any other fighter who beat Ray.
