I believe an argument can be made that they both warrant 2 spots each.

LHW is almost impossible to confidently compile. Suzie Q is big on John Henry Lewis. Solid fighter.

Light Heavy's a ******* of a division alright. It's got about 17 guys that belong in the top 10. ****ers.

    At least #1's pretty easy...

OK, so i'll do these one at a time so I don't make any mistakes...if anyone sees me havering for Greb or Sam after I list them, you shout.

    #1 EZZARD CHARLES
Lloyd Marshall (2) and Ezzard Charles (3) are enough to get Charles into the top five in and of themselves, especially given that Moore can be argued #1 and Marshall can be argued top ten. In purely judging the quality of the fighter as he performed when he weighed between 160 and 175lbs, you can also include wins over Bivins, Maxim, Burley, Overlin, Ray and Yarosz although it needs to be said that these wins can be argued to be HW contests (where the opponent weighs in over 175 - Charles never actually beat Bivins at LHW according to Boxrec) or over the weight clashes belonging to the MW division. Outside of these Ezzard's resume becomes disturbingly thin after Moore and Marshall relating specifically to fights where both protagonists weigh below 175 - probably his wins over Billy Smith and Charley Burley come next (good wins but not the stuff #1 LHW rankings are made of).

Still, he makes it for me based upon his own performances whislt weighing in between 160 and 175, his scintillating destruction of Marshall as it survived on film and most of all his 3-0 over Moore, who would be #1 if I were in the mood for "arguing down" Charles based upon the weights of the fighters invovled in many of his biggest wins.

The trick is not to count these wins twice. IMO it is hard to rate Charles that high at HW if you rank him #1 at 175.

By far this the hardest division to rate.

Going all the way down the top 30 you come across a plethora of guys who are top ten material.

You could probably compile a decent top ten just from the 1920's.

In this division, more than any other, you absolutely have to straw away from the mantra that "the lineal champ is the man" because in this division, more than any other, a lot of the time it just doesn't hold true.

    #2 Archie Moore

Beat Lloyd Marshal in 1945 and fought his last LHW title defence against Rinaldi in 1961. That is insane longevity even if these were his only two notable wins at the weight. But Moore stuffed in one of the most celebrated careers of all time at the weight with wins over Olson, Johnson(loads), Maxim (loads) and Chase to name but a few. Moore is a fine choice for #1 and I think the guys who tend to have Charles there weigh h2h a little more highly than those that don't, that's all.

    #3 Harry Greb

Allentown Joe Gans, Rosenbloom, Tunney, Delaney, Slattery, Loughran, Flowers, Bogash, Kid Norfolk, Shade, both Smiths, Tommy Gibbons, Battlink Levinsky, McTigue, Mehan, Madden, Miske it's a total ****ing disgrace of a LHW resume, and Greb is another fine choice for #1.
