If you're going by this logic, then all you do is go back and back and back and say "who did Fighter A beat that was an ATG? Fighter B. Who did fighter B beat that was an ATG? Fighter C. Who did fighter C.......and so forth."

Julio Cesar Chavez never beat any ATGs, the only ATG that Larry Holmes beat was a Parkinson's disease Muhammad Ali (which would then eliminate Michael Spinks from ATG discussion), Wilfredo Gomez never beat any ATGs other than maybe Carlos Zarate (whose best win is Alfonso Zamora, no ATG), etc..

However, I am not saying the Klitschkos are ATGs either. I think Wlad has a better chance at being one. Vitali may be the better "mythical matchup" fighter, but to me, opponents defeated and accomplishments matter much more, and Wlad has a big edge over his brother in that regard.

It is not necessarely that you have to defeat other ATG, it is more that Vitali fought in the weakest heavyweight area ever. Just look at his resume for christ sake.

It looks like Vitali's standing in Germany has some upwind:

He just received the Bundesverdienstkreuz, the highest German decoration for civilians, for his accomplishments in improving the diplomatic connections between Ukraine and Germany.

    Source: Klitschko homepage.

While this may not have something to do with boxing, it adds another feather in the regards of "greatness", which includes the intangibles in and out of the ring.

No, this has nothing to do with greatness.

I already did a "Godfather 3" thread a while ago........ I stated that it was a BIG drop from the previous two classics........

Look, if you hate the K-bros. that much, well, grow some hairy balls and do your own goddamn thread on why you are such a hater of the brothers.........

The K-bros. are class acts in and out of the ring......... Again, for the umpteenth time, you don't hear or read about the K-bros. getting busted at 2:00 a.m. in some strip club or hotel room for abusing ho's and trying to buy Coke, etc........

I also never hear of them stepping into the ring with the greatest of their generation, Bill. And I think we both know why-their normal height advantage would reverse itself. They'd be slaughtered by the Russian bear.

Yeah but this has nothing to do with greatness. Or you´d have to rank somebody like Schmeling and Patterson up there with Louis while somebody like Johnson or Tyson wouldn´t even be Top20.

There are no more than 14 ATG in history.

Fighters like Baer, Walcott, Patterson, were all very good, made it to champion, but were never greats. Vitali can be ranked beside these men today, I'd say.

What if Vitali unifies with Haye, then beats Solis and Boytsov/Valuev to finish his career, winning all fights in grand style, would that give him a shot to being mentioned as an ATG?

Yes it would give him a shot.

However, beating Haye, then Wlad, then Soli and Valuev would GUARANTEE it.

Haye and Valuev have pretty much ran away from ever fighting V.K. in the ring...... BOTH have had their chances to get it together with Vitali Klit........ Both Haye and Valuev have balked at every offer that has been worth in excess of a million plus dollars as well.......... Neither really wants V.K. here in 2010...........
