Fair enough, I still believe his only hope is rattle Wlad early before he settles into his jab and grab style. I dont think getting Wlad into the deep rounds is smart, as me and you already know once Wlad becomes comfortable in the middle rounds, thats when Manny will tell him to start dropping the hammer on his oppenent and judging by the way Chambers stunned Povetkin a couple times, it doesnt really look good for him in this fight IMO.
Wlad decapitates Sasha with a massive crashing straight right. I'd rather they not fight for Sasha's sake, I think hes the 2nd best in the world next to Wlad, and getting KTFO now could ruin a succesful career for him.
After the Chambers fight I cant see how he could be in anyones top 5, but then again the division is pretty bad, my top 5 goes like this 1. Wlad 2. Peter 3. Chagaev 4. Iggy 5. Valuev
My point is exactly that Povetkin is a more complete fighter than all the three (four) you ranked along with Wlad regardless of his professional inexperience. Povetkin won all but one amateur bouts and an Olympic Gold, demolished almost all opposition and came through as the clear winner in the IBF tourney. He has far better boxing skills, discipline, rhythm and timing than Peter, Chagaev and Valuev and he has not much less punch power than those have... He's better than Maskaev at this point and by far and he's not only advantaged to Iggy due to the same reasons Wlad himself is not to him. I won't go into rankngs cuz that has to do with past and present achievement, but I would bet that Povetkin beats Chagaev, Peter, Valuev and Maskaev.
He won the tournament, so I don't see how there could be an overestimation. He TKO'd Byrd and he didn't look hurt against Chambers at any point. He took 3 or 4 stiff rights early in the fight and just kept coming forward. I agree that he needs to shore up his defense against Wlad. And pressuring Klitschko would be the tact to take. The one thing I really like about Povetkin is his ability to put together combinations. And not just 1-2, 1-2's. He was mixing up his body and head attack last night, and throwing in hooks with the straight punches. The biggest thing for Povetkin if and when he fights Wlad is, like Kobe said, don't let Wlad settle in. It seems to take Klitschko at least 3 rounds to find his range, but once he does it's lights out. If Povetkin can keep his head moving and keep peppering Wlad withpunches, I'd make him a live underdog in that fight.
We all know a good amateur back ground/Olymipic success doesnt always add up to a good pro career, Audley Harrison the most recent example of this. I think Povetkin has decent skills, but aside from his workrate, he was hardly impressive in my eyes. I would only favor him against Maskeav at this point, the fact that he has had only success with light punching Heavyweight concerns me, I feel wants he goes up against a guy bigger than him physically he will fall apart, his chin is not as good as some people believe, it will be exposed against any of the guys I previously mentioned.
Jesus, Wlad would stop Povetkin hard. Povetkin is not ready for Wlad. Povetkin was overated by a lot of people. The guy I saw last night is not the saviour of the division. But he didn't look bad. Needs to fix some of those defensive holes and work on his stamina and he needs a jab. There are some positives on Povetkin. I like his aggresion, workrate, determination, and 2-fisted attack. Good heavyweight who has been matched very tough. I'd make him a definite top 10 guy and maybe a top 5 as well. Povetkin, like the rest of the division, won't beat Klitschko.
don't get me wrong i like povetkin. he is a good hw with some upside. i was just analyzing a potential wlad-povetkin fight. i just think he lacks the power and punch resistance to get the job done. the main pt i was trying to make is how chambers, byrd, and donald stood right in front of him letting him get his combos off while wlad would not be so stationary. h2h i think only wlad and iggy would beat him. why iggy? his movement and two fisted skill could help him eek out a decision. i think povetkin would handle maskaev, chagaev and valuev with his workrate. peter would be very interesting because both are so aggressive. that's a close fight in my eyes and one i'd love to see. his punch resistance still leaves some questions in my mind?
Why does Povetkin's punch resistance leave some questions? It has never been an issue in the amateurs or pros. Povetkin has shown a good chin in all his fights. Chambers was a sharp counter puncher, who landed some on the button type of shots early in the match when his power was 100%. As they, say in boxing the punch you do not see hurts you the most. I think Povetkin has a good chin, and great stamina / guts. While I do not want to compare Povetkin at this stage in his career to Holyfield or Marciano, he got that type of stuff in him. The will to win, and the stamina to keep throwing punches. Even when hes been whacked or has to change tactics. Povetkin will do what it takes to win. Wlad will probably beat Povetkin at this stage in his career, but I still beleive Povetkin is good enough to win a belt and defend it a few times. Povetkin looked a bit flat last night. I've seen him before. He usually has more speed and snap on his punches, better footwork, and a better defense.
There should be a gigantic gap between being an Olympian for the UK and for Russia to start with. Without going into Audley's terrible matchmaking as a pro, Povetkin is having all that support from the German promoters and trainers and which was proved to have been a success with Wlad, Vitaly, Ruslan, Nicolai, Virchis and keeps on producing more carefully matched prize fighters-former top amateurs from the Eastern block. Sure that Big O, the White Wolf and Iggy were built through the american systems like Alex Zolkin once was... Peter is another case since he came from Nigeria like Ibeabushi in the US, Hide and Akinwande in the UK... As much as I get thrilled with Peter's performances, I didn't see any sort of boxing approach from Peter against Wlad ( lost all rounds but the two he knocked down Wlad, 5th and 10th I believe), doesn't move his head, doesn't slip punches, doesn't put em together and relies only on his chin and big punch - that is not clearly the way to do it and I don't believe he improved that much twice against Toney and McCline... Valuev is just a freak mountain of a man and Chagaev is a very heavy handed unorthodox volley puncher, Povetkin must surely have a better chance than those guys in boxing terms ( even if it doesn't go beyond 10-20% chances)...
