I have watched that fight a few times. First time i scored very clear for Calzaghe. I tried to watch again and give rounds to Hopkins and had it close for Calzaghe, then watched again another time just scoring as I saw it and had it clear for Calzaghe. I think many want to hang on to Byrds card as some kind of hope and dont think people would be questioning it if it had of been a UD, but that Byrd card gave haters something to try and argue with. Im sure some did see it for Hopkins, but not many I dont think. and struggle to see it myself, but each to their own. I would have to go back and look at the actual score I gave but I think it was around 116-111 also, but would have to check to confirm
When I first saw It I thought it could go either way.. But when I actually sat down and scored it, I can't see giving it to Hopkins. Joe has a case for winning the last 9 rounds in a row.
The analyses in this thread are surprisingly superficial. People mostly want to trash talk instead of trying to add anything of value. What stands out with Andre Ward is that he controles the fights very well even when he faces top competition. The opponents rarely get a real foot hold. This tells us more about his chances against Joe Calzaghe than merely staring at his resume. Calzaghe was a special and great boxer but often struggled. Mikael Kessler and Robin Reid gave him lots of problems, and especially the Dane landed several flush shots when he rallied in the end of their bout. I think he was starting to soften Calzaghe up. There is clearly a possibility that the technical sound, athleticly talented and versatile Ward would beat Calzaghe. I like to compare him with Wladimir Klitschko in the meaning that he sticks to a disciplined approach and even though he slips up momentarily he ultimately does the better work through out the fight. However. Ward is far from unvulnurable. When he fought an unusually game Arthur Abraham he was outboxed in spurts. If Abraham could do it, why not Calzaghe? The relentless boxer from Wales is quick on his hands and feets, and remember that Ward has never defeated someone with comparable speed. He actually avoided to fight the very fast Andre Dirrell during Super Six, violating the terms of the contract with Showtime :-( It should also be added that Calzaghe just like Ward is on the ball every second of every round, and he got weird stamina. He doesn't get confused when faced with challenges, instead he gets focused. I think Ward vs Calzaghe would be a busy and messy fight, with Calzaghe slapping away like crazy and a baffled Ward landing crips counters and mauling on the inside. I favour Calzaghe to edge it in a controversial SD. But I sure as hell wouldn't bet my house on it
I'd favor Ward in a narrow UD. I'd imagine he'd be a lot more busy offensively than he normally is in a fight against Calzaghe; I think Joe C would probably outwork him with his volume of punching but Ward would probably land the more telling shots. I'd imagine it would end up being something like 7-5 or 8-4. On a side note, Hopkins is one of my favorite fighters of all time but I can't see how anyone had him winning his fight against Calzaghe. I actually bet money on that fight and knew before the scorecards were announced who won that fight. IMO Joe won that fight by around 4 rounds, Hopkins did well in the beginning but just didn't throw enough in the middle rounds. You have to be quite active offensively against a guy like Calzaghe in order to get a decision. He's very beatable, he just caught the right guys at the right time when he faced them. Kudos to him and his handlers for waiting as long as they did before they crossed the pond for big matches.
Ward beats Calzaghe. I think Joe’s best wins were over Mikkel Kessler, an old Chris Eubank and then…. who? Lacy? Manfredo? Omar Sheika? I don’t think he beat a 44 year old Hopkins, and I don’t even recognize the guy who called himself Roy Jones. Calzaghe’s resume is weak. I’m not doubting the guy’s talent, and I consistently say he’s a top 3 or 4 SMW without doubt. But in terms of resume, he is nothing like as good as Ward’s (already). I don’t think he has the quality of opposition Froch has. And Mikkel Kessler’s best win is better than Calzaghe’s too, because I don’t think Calzaghe ever beat anyone as good as Froch. Even Allan Green is a better win than all but a few of Joe’s.
What a dumb post. So Wards best win is... A faded version of... How do you think Green was a better win than Eubank, Reid, Mitchell, Brewer, Sheika, Starie, Veit, Bika, Woodhall, Lacy, Mkertchyan, Veit 2, to name just a few
...who cares! Mind will never change, might of done if Ward fought at least outside of his own house and more. Potential to be great yet not fulfilled.
