Yeah, I guess it's all relative. In a world where 5'7, 155-165lb men fought in heavyweight title fights, it's probably fair to consider him one of the "superheavies" of his day.

I contend that the 270 pound John L. Sullivan who pole-axed Texas Jim McCormack was a superheavy.

In all honesty he doesn't look that great in your photo. He looks just fine. He looks like a fighter who is getting old.

His best results, against McVea and Langford and Burns and Jeanette, were achieved at 192 and below.

So did James Toney become a 250lb SHW?
Or was he just a 150lb MW carrying a bunch of fat?

Is Povetkin bigger than Jack Johnson?
Doesn't Povetkin have a little excess weight?

Here he is against Cravan. He is 240lb according to Boxrec.

He looks like a SHW beast.
Look how big his arms and legs are, no fat.
He has some flab, but actually not that much.

Almost all modern SHWs have some flab.
The same ones some people consider next level specimens.

    Not really.

Modern superheavies are not 6 foot and half an inch. Modern elite superheavies have their best results at a superheavy weight. Johnson went on to fight down at 212 and 218 later during the time he was calling out Dempsey.

ah you mean dimensions to include the Klitsckos.

hence all your "noone can beat superheavyweights" type threads to try and disprove the reality of wlad getting wiped out by a retiree and vit getting stopped by a former MW.

If that Johnson fought today, people would say he is too big and strong for the old timers.
Good point about him coming back down, but he was 240lb for Cravan, and he looks to carry it as well as many modern SHWs.

He looks a bit like Lionel Butler but in all other regards those two shouldn't be in the same sentence.

Cravan's technique consisted of cowering away his arms covering his face Johnson laughed at him and ,in an effort to to encourage hin to show some fight, kicked him in the rump three times, finally ,becoming exasperated he clipped him and knocked him sparko. It was really an exhibition, [Pollack doesn't include it on Johnsons record,]and a pretty poor one at that. Cravan has three recorded fights 1.against a middleweight 2.against a debutee,3. the Johnson debacle.
As to their weights,I don't believe they actually weighed in but by 1916 Johnson could well have been 240lbs plus.
