I've read this many times. To me he was not drunk but the mixture badly upset his stomach.

I was sensationalising in the heading, but it is pretty bad practice, and you would have to think that modern nutrition and thinking would have greatly improved Genes performance in this one.

lol, but why is it that alcohol was a remedy for everything, like in the old west, a swig of whiskey was supposed to make cutting off a leg or pulling out an arrow less painful, one swig just aint gonna do it.

I've always been amazed that in the late teens and twenties something like that would have been advised, or to drink anything during a fight. None of the fighters I've known have ever taken more then a sip of water between rounds, usually its just spit out.

Orange juice, brandy, and blood...problably didn't taste too good. It's a wonder he didn't puke all over the ring...With the description of this fight, you would have to say Tunney had crazy heart to win.

You'd have to question the quality of the brandy used too, since we're talking about the prohibition era.

Depending on your source Greb either smashed the top of his head into Tunney's face and nose in round one, essentially blinding Tunney, or landed a legal punch to do it.

Since Greb was anything but a hard puncher, you have to wonder.

Not all news and old sources are correct on major events in a fight. Years back, they said it was a right uppercut that Willard used to KO Jack Johnson. And some people believed it. Then a film came around and it as the right cross.
