So Hatton said he wanted it and it was bollocks but Cotto says he wants it and he's desperate for the fight?

LOL @ the posters repping Hatton at 140. How about Hatton vs Cotto at 135? Or how about both at 126 looking like two human stick insects?

Hatton wouldn't ever have beaten Cotto. Be serious now. He was holding on for his life against Urango when a body shot went in, he'd be well and truely ****ed against Cotto.

Hatton decided to fight Carlos Maussa, who Cotto had already beaten instead.

Cotto would have beaten Ricky, at 140 or 147. He's just too good, Cotto was and still is world class. Name me an opponent Ricky beat who was better than Miguel Cotto?.....An aged Kostya Tszyu perhaps? Cotto would have probably beaten that version of Kostya too.

Yep, thats how boxing works. You were slagging a bloke off a couple of days ago in the Khan-Prescott thread for making similarly lazy comparisons.

I find the regard Hatton's held in quite bizarre. Entirely on the basis of beating Tyszu he became a monster at LWW, despite giving sub-standard performances against every opponent after.

Cotto's just a much more rounded fighter at any weight. Hatton didn't have the relentlessness or punch resistance that Margarito did. Plus he's smaller and doesn't punch on the way in, preferring to clinch to get in position to fire bodyshots and his left hook.

Cotto deals with all these things beautifully: sharp jab, his own left-hook and his underrated right cross. Ricky would get nailed on the way in, he'd lose an inside firefight because Cotto's a much more compact puncher, and he's not got the strength to maul and wear Miguel down.

So basically, Hatton rushes in a lot early and maybe wins some rounds before Cotto gets the distance and starts breaking Hatton apart.

People who are giving Hatton no chance are forgetting about the realities of the situation.

The talk of the fight happening was at 2005-2006 at 140, after that Cotto was at 147. Those years were probably Hattons prime and were also years when Cotto was struggling badly to make 140.

But hey, lets ignore the times when Cotto was hurt at 140 and go with that body shot for Urango instead eh???;)

Hatton was a decent fighter with a big win over an ageing HOFer on his resume. The other decent LWW around duting his tenure, he didn't fight: Cotto, Witter, Torres, Holt. He'd struggle severely against the current crop of LWWs: Bradley, Khan, Ortiz, Alexander.

His second or third best win is someone like Malignaggi, by comparison to Cotto, he knocked down and beat undefeated Paulie and that probably wouldn't make it into Cotto's best 5 wins.

I liked Hatton as much as the next guy, but him getting KTFO came at the right time, because he'd either look stupid getting out-boxed against the slick 140ers or he's look stupid avoiding them I'd be more inclined to say the latter. I mean, last year he mentioned a come back and he listed potential opponents like Marquez, Mayweather and "IBF Champ Juan Urango", that's the lengths he'd have gone to to avoid the slick boxers who rule 140 today, to rematch fĂșcking Juan Urango when there are better champs out there.

Hatton would've annihilated Ortiz, southpaw or not.

But then you have Cotto who didn't fight Hatton, Witter, Holt, Urango at 140 around that time. Theres holes in every fighters record.

Lets be fair, you've put a list of 4 fighters up that Hatton didn't fight. One of them is Cotto who also, obviously, didn't fight Hatton (but the "blame" for the two not meeting seems to be automatically Hattons fault) and 2 of the others Cotto didn't fight them either.

But Cotto defended his belt 6 times, (including wins over undefeated Torres, Malignaggi, both who went on to be world champions) then moved up to fight stiffer competition. He didn't fight any Hatton sloppy seconds like the way Hatton fought Maussa, either.

How many of Hatton's wins went on to win a world belt after he had beat them? Urango?

Hatton defended his title 5 times, hardly a massive difference. Lets be honest, neither mans reign at 140 was the stuff of legend.

In these Cotto-Hatton threads I try to talk about the fight, the backdrop to it and what would possibly happen.

I don't feel the need to have a pop at Cotto, pick holes in Cottos record, ask who he didn't fight, slag off weaker opponents like Urkal, Pinto, call him a "paper champ" at 140, blame him for Hatton-Cotto not happening etc.

I don't pull down Cottos record when I'm discussing Hatton-Cotto, It never seems to work the other way round though.....its just point scoring and has very little to do with the likely outcome of the fight.

May be a need to be more aggressive....;O)

So is this the line in the sand that decides who would win Cotto-Hatton at 140/ 147? I don't think so....its not about Hattons reign vs. Cottos reign.
