No. Hopkins was trying to make his legend. The guy didn't need the money and wasn't interested in pointless mandos. Props to BHops: he genuinely wanted to add to his legend by unifying LHW at 50 years old.

When Stevenson and Haymon tried to start messing him around by holding out knowing his mando was close, Hopkins looked at facing the 'other' titlist rather than wasting time on an insignificant mandatory.

I don't think Hopkins imagined that either Kovalev or Stevenson were going to be easy fights but for a guy who already has all the money he needs and is fighting as much to challenge himself as for the glory that was his choice. BHops could have probably carried on beating guys like Mohammedi for another few years, but chose to reach for the stars.:D -(sorry - couldn't help it)

All props to the old guy.

some of u guys aren't reading my post right, i'm not saying that kovalev is a cherry pick, i'm saying perhaps hopkins viewed him as a cherry pick, hopkins underrated kovalev and thought he could easily school him having gotten overconfident in himself after beating his last several good but not great opponents.

i was rooting for hopkins to win and even thought myself that with his craftiness and experience he might be able to pull out the decision, that's probably exactly what hopkins was thinking as well. kovalev was a beast though and dominated hopkins for 12 rounds.

people are getting overdefensive on here. hopkins thought he could beat kovalev like he did with murat and shumenov i bet. a hyped european with only power, with more power, but same skill levels was as his last 2 opponents, was what BHOP thought. so you are right bro.

How's taking on the toughest mofo in the division cherrypicking? Bernard thought he could frustrate Kovalev, but I doubt he was kidding himself that it would be a walk in the park. Though you never know...

He finally realised that hes nearly 50 and should be home with a pipe and slippers writing angry letters to local papers about the level of graffiti at the local park.

Cherry pick? You must have missed the part where Kovalev was holding a belt that Bernard wanted.
