Was Kovalev "given" the title to make amends for past mistreatment?

He was systematically broken down in the second fight regardless of what you’ve defined as illegal low blows. At one point in the fight he was hit with two clear body shots and stopped fighting turned to Weeks and claimed they were low blows it was at this point I knew he had lost faith in himself. I’m a firm believer that the folks supporting the low blow theories need to remove themselves from Kovalevs support group because he doesn’t need apologists he needs motivation and excuses get you nowhere. I agree with his disenchantment surrounding the stoppage, it was premature and he should have been allowed to truly go out on his shield.

 

Sure. But you don't have to gift him a title in the process. Gvozdyk was the number one contender in the WBO and any fight for their vacant belt should have involved him.

As for the 2nd fight imagine if the roles were reversed and Kovalev belted Ward 3 times hard on his balls. Weeks would have taken a point and given Ward 5 minutes to recover.

 

Yeah that fight shouldn't have been for a title but that's far from the first time that's happened and it definitely won't be the last.

No, nobody does Kovalev any favors like they do SOB Ward! SOB landed low blows, testicle blows and they are illegal, he also headbutted, held, wrestled, he owned the referee, judges, boxing commission. SOB said that neutral judges would be unfair! I'll agree to disagree on fight one. but Kovalev looked like crap vs ward in the rematch shadowboxing missing shots feigning low blows early on. yes the last punch was a low blow while he was bent over (which is illegal in boxing to do, as is turning your back to the action)
