Yeah, Toney at the time was arguably the #1 P4P fighter in the world - and he didn't win a single round against Roy. Great, great win for Jones...
The lineage started when hill and I believe maske, the clear top two lightheavyweights on everyones list fought each other. The ring also failed to award naz the belt as well as briggs and mosley. They aren't perfect.
Nigel Benn tried to act as soft and as ***** as possible to lure RJJ in to take the fight. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgcl9qLqX5I[/ame] RJJ didnt want it.
Then Merchant told him point blank "You are bigger than these meaningless Alphabet Organizations why don't you make some legit fights?" and then then interview was over. good question from larry, wish my boy rjj had a ****ing answer... and that lineage makes sense, even if not commonly acknowledged
I'll say at HW . . . yes, a paper champ. In the other weigh class NO. Anybody who says so is . . . IGNORANT.
Why are people ignorant to think otherwise? At MW Jones beat an unknown unaccomplished fighter. Now Hopkins went on to have a very good MW career but at the time he wasnt the top MW. J Jackson was higher rated than both of them with a better resume in the division. At SMW Jones only beat Toney who didnt have as good a SMW resume as Benn or Eubank. Even if The Bias Ring mag had Toney at #1, Jones beating Toney doesnt automatically make Jones #1. Just recently Ward beat Kessler who was #1 and Bute went to #1 because his resume was overall better than Wards. Ward went to #2 and Kessler #3. Remember Toneys big SMW victory was a fighter Benn KOd in a round over 2 years previous. So was Jones the #1 SMW with the far more established fighters in the division with better resumes in Benn and Eubank. Not in my opinion but its open for debate. Why do you think this is ignorant. At LHW, Michalczewski beat the man, so with that in mind how could Jones have been the man, he didnt beat Dariusz who did beat the man. Why do you think this is ignorant?
paper to me is a loaded term. he was a unified champ, considered the best in the division for the better part of a decade. not the same thing as ruiz was at heavy
I have read every page and am drawing in on conclussions. Does anyone think Jones would have gone as far had he faced the top men of these divisions he won titles in :think? His competition would have been alot tougher. At MW it would have been big punching J Jackson and possibly big punching G McClellan later. At SMW Jones would have been fighting Benn and Eubank At LHW he would have had to have fought Michalczewski. Put those names up and think about how you think it would have turned out if Jones had of fought these fighters - Jackson, McClellan, Eubank, Benn and Michalczewski
