Maybe even going into the rematch with Holy he was still seen as invincible. There was a lot of talk about how Tyson hadn't trained properly and would blow Holy field away in the rematch. He was fearsome, even after he came back from prison.
Such was the aura of Tyson he was still a 2-1 favorite to beat Holyfield in the rematch. Fascinating really.
Yes and No. There are casual sports fans who still to this day Tyson can do no wrong. You knowknow line...."if he gets Rooney back and starts moving his head." I had alot of conversations with the guys in my Army Platoon who worshipped Tyson. Many of them couldn't imagine him losing. I could. There are some of us who are true boxing fans that we're looking a little closer. He hadn't fought much at all. Never went past 4 rounds. Holyfield we knew would find out what Tyson had left win or lose. He was gonna have to fight and dig alot deeper. My own mother told me if Tyson doesn't KO him early "his parachute won't land" WTF?
Tyson was in decline before he went to prison. There’s no way he could have as good as he was in his prime when he came out. He didn’t look more seasoned or more mature just a lot older and worn out.
After Douglas we all knew he was diminished. His absolute prime was so short. Probably 2 years. His style was so exact and to not be hit by the bigger guys took so much in reflexes and speed and concentration, that any slow down in any of those variables meant he will get hit more, and it happened. Bruno was the first evidence that he was slipping.. It cannot be age because he was not that old.
Only 2 years absoulute prime for Tyson ... Are you crazy ? His prime was between 1985-1990 maybe 1991. I don't know other heavyweights who had significantly longer "absolute" prime. But most important Tyson could take punches by "big" hard punching fighters like Bruno or Ruddock.
I considered Holyfield the best heavyweight at the time, and I was right. No surprises when Holyfield beat him both times, the biting just made Mike look even more heartless and unchampionlike imo.
Yeah, I never got why people were so high on Williams after that fight. Especially with his mentality in the fight....trying to go to war with Tyson in round 1. He got SUPER lucky. I mean Tyson was wrecking the guy...he was ripping him to the body and landing vicious uppercuts...he had Danny wobbling all over the ring with every flush shot he landed. He was literally beating him from pillar to post right up until the point he injured his left leg...which Tyson didn't try in the slightest to use as an excuse...but its obviously the only reason he lost. Take that injury out of the fight and Williams doesn't make it to the 3rd round.
Sure. What are the excuses for Mike's next fight? He lost that one by sitting on his stool====didn't want to come out for another round against that human wrecking machine and dynamo Kevin McBride.
