We all know the WBA is trying to clean up its mass of titles in each division and abolish the "super" and "regular" world titles with the result that there will be one world champion in each division. A good example of the WBA doing this is in the middleweight division (by ordering Golovkin (the super champion) to fight Jacobs (the regular champion). I'm assuming the winner of this fight will be called the WBA world champion (not super or regular). But what are the WBA doing in the heavyweight division? I think the end goal is to have one champion but they seem to be taking an age to get there. There is the added complication of Oquendo having a court order to fight for the "regular" title. Given that, I can't understand why the WBA sanctioned the Joshua v Klitschko fight with its "super" title. They could have just removed the super title when Fury vacated and had the regular title become the single world title. The only reason seems to be the sanctioning fees they will receive from Joshua v Klitschko - but if that is the case then perhaps the aim to only have one world title per division is not genuine (i.e. if money speaks more). The WBA have mandated that the winner of Joshua v Klitschko fight Ortiz for the "super title" and the winner of Briggs v Oquendo fight Ustinov for the "regular" title. With that in mind it doesn't seem that there will be a single world title in the WBA heavyweight division in the near future.
They've said they wanted to get rid of the 3 belts ludacrisy for a while now, but in the meantime there have been quite a number of fights for "vacant" interim and regular belts. So instead of just calling those divisions "fixed" they recreated the problem they said they were trying to fix. Now they're also claiming to want to create a Clean Boxing Program with strict VADA drugtesting, like the WBC. But until I actually see it, I expect it will be more empty words from a bullshirt organistation.
WBA has made plenty of new belts this year. Why would in all honesty they want to scrap their revenue sources? And at MW they still have N´Dam as the interim champ...
